WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Freshman Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team was named to the USTA Summer Collegiate Team on Thursday (June 17), administered by the USTA and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). He was one of 13 men's players selected to the team.
As a freshman in 2009-10, King competed atop the lineup for the Wolverines in both singles and doubles, going 21-13 in singles play (14-9 dual) and 18-11 in doubles (15-7 dual). He teamed with junior Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) throughout most the season at No. 1 doubles, and qualified for the NCAA Individual Championships last month, reaching the second round (Round of 32). King earned multiple honors as a freshman, including Big Ten Freshman of the Year and ITA/Midwest Region Rookie of the Year. He is one of only two Big Ten players on the USTA Summer Collegiate Team, joining Chase Buchanan (Ohio State).
The USTA Summer Collegiate Team is an elite training program for the top American collegiate tennis players. The program began in 1996 and is funded by the USTA. It is designed to provide college players with valuable exposure to the USTA Pro Circuit in a team-oriented environment during the summer months.
In addition to competing on the USTA Pro Circuit, USTA Player Development will host two Pro Tour Transition camps -- one for men, one for women -- for the selected players. The men's camp will be held June 21-24 on clay courts in Boca Raton, Fla., and coached by USTA National Coach David Dilucia.
The top six American players from the season-ending ITA national singles rankings are eligible for automatic selections. The remaining players on each team were selected by USTA Player Development staff in conjunction with USTA National Coaches, and current collegiate coaches. Eighteen of the players selected received 2010 ITA All-America honors.
