EUGENE, Ore. -- Junior Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team completed the decathlon in 14th on Friday (June 11) on day three of the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field.
Shotwell began the day in 17th place (3,728 points) but turned it up in the first two events of the day, beginning with an eighth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (14.91) and followed up with a fifth-place showing in the discus (41.22m/135-3). He also tied for 14th place in pole vault (4.40m/14-5 1/4), moving him up to 13th in the overall standings with two events to go.
He concluded the decathlon by taking 12th place in the javelin (52.82m/173-3) and 15th in the 1,500-meter run (4:47.69), completing the two-day event with 7,271 points and wrapping up Michigan's season.
Ashton Eaton (Oregon) won the decathlon with 8,457 points, his third straight title in the event.
