N O T E S
Junior Frank Shotwell came into the second day of the decathlon on Thursday (April 22) in third place. He temporarily took the the lead after finishing first in back-to-back events (110-meter hurdles, discus) but fell all the way 14th after failing to record a height in the pole vault -- therefore receiving no points for the event -- and finished in 13th overall (6,708 points). Sophomore Kurt Reichenbach led the Wolverine contingent with an 11th-place finish (6,728 points).
Sophomore Joe Strizich won the javelin throw with a best mark of 57.68 meters (189-3 feet). He finished in 12th (6,711 points).
With their point totals, Reichenbach and Strizich are now fourth and fifth, respectively, on Michigan's all-time performance list for the decathlon. Shotwell is the school-record holder (7,362 points, 2008), Sean Clancy is second (7,147 points, 1993) and Dave Hall is third (7,034 points, 1985). Reichenbach passes Ryan Stevenson (6,446 points, 2001) for fourth, while Strizich overtakes Brian Yonkoski (6,239 points, 1999) for fifth.
Action at the Drake Relays continue on Friday (April 23), beginning at 9:48 a.m. with the 4x100-meter relay team of junior Nick McCampbell, sophomore Nicholas Neuman, freshman Aaron Taylor and sophomore Matthew Campbell. At 11:35 a.m., McCampbell and junior Carl Buchanon will compete in the semifinals of the 110-meter hurdles. At 1:15 p.m., freshman John Greenlee will compete in the pole vault, followed by junior Robert Peddlar in the long jump at 1:30 p.m. At 2:30 p.m., senior Sean Pruitt will compete in the shot put. The day ends at 4 p.m. for Michigan with the 4x400-meter relay team (Neuman, Buchanon, Taylor, Campbell).
