AUSTIN, Texas -- Facing its third straight top-20 opponent on the road, the No. 25-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team fell to No. 5 Texas, 6-1, on Saturday (March 13) at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center. Michigan's lone victory came from senior Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs Prep), who defeated No. 95 Kellen Damico at No. 3 singles.
The win was Sroczynski's second over a ranked opponent in as many weeks, going along with his defeat of No. 73 Jonathan Dahan (Cal) in Michigan's upset win last Thursday (March 4) against No. 10 Cal. Sroczynski won in straight sets, going to tiebreakers both times.
Texas took the early lead in doubles after all three of its ranked teams won. Michigan's No. 2 tandem of senior George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory) and Sroczynski were dealt just its second loss of the dual-match season in doubles play, falling to No. 22 Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico, 9-7. With the loss to Texas, Michigan has surrendered the doubles point in just two of its 10 matches during the dual-match slate.
Freshman Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan) took an early lead at No. 2 singles over No. 10 Ed Corrie (Texas), taking the first set, 6-2. Corrie rebounded, however, and took the next two sets to end the match on a high note for the Longhorns. Two other Wolverines, junior Chris Madden (Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa) and Navas, had opportunities to take early leads in their singles matches at Nos. 4 and 5, but both lost the first set tiebreakers and could not recover.
Michigan returns to the Varsity Tennis Center for the first time in one month next Saturday (March 20), as it opens a six-match home stretch and Big Ten Conference play with in-state rival Michigan State. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

With the loss, Michigan falls to 4-6 on the season. The Wolverines open Big Ten play next Saturday against Michigan State and have just one non-conference dual match left (vs. Stanford on March 25).
Michigan is now 3-13 all-time against Texas in dual matches.
Texas was the highest-ranked team Michigan has played so far this season (No. 5).
It was only Sroczynski and Navas' second loss of the dual-match season in doubles (7-2).
Jung lost to No. 7 Dimitar Kutrovsky for the second time this season. The two previously met at the ITA National Indoors Tournament back in November, with Kutrovsky winning 6-2, 6-4, the same score as their match on Saturday.
The match against Texas was Michigan's third straight on the road.
