ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's track and field head coach Fred LaPlante announced on Wednesday (Oct. 27) the addition of four volunteer assistant coaches for the upcoming 2011 season as Shean Perry, Christo Landry and Colin Leak will join the Wolverines for the first time, while Tiberia Patterson re-joins the staff.
Perry joins the staff after spending the past two-plus years as a graduate assistant at Eastern Michigan. He oversaw both men's and women's pole vaulters, including two-time NCAA Regional qualifier and 2010 all-conference selection Jessica Hemingway. Prior to arriving at Eastern Michigan, Perry spent two seasons at his alma mater, Oberlin College, where he competed from 2003-06. Perry will oversee the pole vaulters.
Landry and Leak will assist first-year U-M cross country head coach Alex Gibby with the U-M distance runners. Leak, a 2010 graduate from William & Mary, was a 2009 NCAA All-American in cross country and a six-time all-conference selection as a distance runner, competing primarily in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. In addition, Leak was a 2010 Penn Relays and Colonial Relays champion, helping leading the Tribe to four straight conference crowns in cross country. Landry graduated from William & Mary in 2008 and was a three-time NCAA All-American in cross country, as well as being named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Athlete of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2007.
Patterson returns to the Michigan staff after departing earlier this year to be an interim assistant coach at Eastern Michigan. Before leaving in February, Patterson spent three seasons as a volunteer assistant for Michigan, primarily working under LaPlante with the U-M hurdlers. Patterson got his start in coaching at Lehigh University, where he was an assistant coach in 1994 and 1995, coaching the sprints and hurdles group.
The four volunteer assistants join Gibby and assistant coach Mohamad Saatara as new members of the U-M coaching staff opposite LaPlante, who enters his third season at the helm of the men's track and field program (13th overall at Michigan).
