MADISON, Wis. -- Senior forward DeShawn Sims (Detroit, Mich./Pershing) scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, but the University of Michigan men's basketball team dropped a 54-48 road decision at Wisconsin (No. 18 AP/No. 19 ESPN/USA Today) on Wednesday (Jan. 20) at the Kohl Center. The Wolverines held the lead for the first 36 minutes of the contest, but a 24-9 Wisconsin run over the final nine minutes was enough to give the Badgers the victory.
Junior guard Manny Harris (Detroit, Mich./Redford) added 11 points and sophomore guard Stu Douglass (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) chipped in eight for the Maize and Blue.
Michigan jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first nine minutes of the contest. Sims scored eight of the first 10 points of the game for the Wolverines before Harris capped the run with a triple from the wing. The Maize and Blue held Wisconsin to 1-for-13 shooting from the field, including 0-for-8 from beyond the arc, in the early going.
Wisconsin responded with an 8-2 run to cut the U-M advantage to 15-10, before Sims answered for the Wolverines with a 14-foot baseline jumper to beat the shot clock. Sims' sixth field goal of the half started a 6-0 spurt for the Maize and Blue that pushed its advantage to 21-10 with 5:25 to play in the first half.
Wisconsin held the Wolverines scoreless from that point until the intermission, trimming U-M's advantage to 21-18 at the break. Sims led the way with 12 points and eight rebounds in the opening 20 minutes. Keaton Nankivil had five points to lead Wisconsin.
Michigan shot just 37.5 percent (9-for-24) from the floor in the opening half, but held Wisconsin to just 32 percent shooting (8-for-25).
Wisconsin cut the U-M lead to just two early in the second stanza before six straight points from Sims pushed Michigan's advantage back to eight, 28-20, with 16:39 to play. The Badgers crept back within three before back-to-back trifecas from Douglass stretched the Michigan lead to nine, 39-30, with nine minutes left in the contest, forcing a Wisconsin timeout.
Again Wisconsin answered, going on a 7-0 run to pull back within two, 39-37. The Wolverines and Badgers traded the next eight points before Wisconsin tied the contest, 43-43, with 4:04 remaining with a pair of free throws.
Wisconsin built a six-point lead, 49-43, holding the Maize and Blue scoreless for the next three-and-a-half minutes until an old-fashioned three-point play by Harris with 38 second remaining cut the Badgers lead in half, but Wisconsin escaped with the victory.
Trevon Hughes led the Badgers with 20 points. Rob Wilson scored 13 and Nankivil added 10 for Wisconsin.
The Wolverines will continue their two-game road trip this Saturday (Jan. 23) when they travel to Purdue (No. 13 AP/No. 15 ESPN/USA Today). The game against the Boilermakers is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.
