NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Senior Adam Harris(Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team was named the men's Great Lakes Region Track Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row on Monday (June 8).
Harris finished first in both the 100- and 200-meter dash at the 2009 Big Ten Championships. He is the first U-M athlete since Andrew Bruce in 1981 to accomplish that feat, and the first U-M athlete ever to win the indoor 60- and 200-meter titles and the outdoor 100- and 200-meter titles in the same season.
Harris placed third in the 100-meter dash at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship with a new school-record time of 10.09, the fifth-fastest time in the country. The senior also set the indoor school records in the 60 and the 200 this season and is third all-time in the outdoor 200. With his third-place finish in the 100-meter dash and his fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (20.67) at the regional championships, Harris automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in both events.
U-M will wrap up its season by sending Harris and three other individuals to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, scheduled for June 10-13 at the John McDonnell Fieldin Fayetteville, Ark. Joining Harris in Arkansas will be fifth-year senior Dan Harmsen(Rockford, Mich./Rockford), senior/junior Lex Williams(Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) and sophomore Carl Buchanon(South Bend, Ind./Clay).
