ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Michigan ice hockey team swept the College Hockey Showcase for the sixth time in program history with a 3-2 win over Wisconsin (NR USA Today/No. 15 USCHO) at Yost Ice Arena on Saturday (Nov. 28). The Wolverines opened the Showcase with a 6-0 win over Minnesota on Friday.
Junior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) opened the scoring 6:02 into the middle frame with a power-play marker. Wisconsin responded just over four minutes later to to tie the game at one. A shorthanded tally from sophomore center Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) broke the stalemate, returning the lead to U-M with 1:55 left in the stanza. Junior center Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario) added an insurance marker at the 11:52 mark in the final frame, which proved to be the game-winner after the Badgers scored with 5:37 remaining in the game.
Junior goaltender Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.) stayed busy all night, making a career-high 39 saves including 15 shots in the second period.
Michigan's best scoring opportunity in the opening period occurred when senior defenseman Steve Kampfer (Jackson, Mich.) intercepted a pass just outside the Wisconsin blue line at the 6:08 mark. Kampfer brought the puck up the right side before centering a pass to Hagelin, whose shot almost found a way in between the Wisconsin goaltender's right leg and the left goal post.
The first goal of the contest came 6:02 into the middle frame on the power play when Rust slipped the puck past Wisconsin netminder Scott Gudmandson on his blocker side. Kampfer sent the puck from the high point to Hagelin stationed above the right faceoff dot. Hagelin slid the disc to Rust, who was just behind the goal line to the right of the Wisconsin net. He took a couple of strides toward the cage before getting off his shot.
Wisconsin captain Blake Geoffrion evened the game up at one goal apiece, popping a rebound into the upper right corner of the cage for the equalizer. Right wing Craig Smith carried the puck up the slot, backhanding a shot from just outside the crease. Hogan made the initial save and then poked the puck away with his stick, but Geoffrion scooped up the puck in front of the crease and took advantage of the opening.
A turnover by Wisconsin led to a faceoff in the Badgers' zone, which set up Michigan's second goal of the evening. Glendening scored - unassisted and shorthanded - on a shot from below the right faceoff dot with 1:55 remaining in the second stanza. The goal marked Michigan's second straight night with a shorty, scoring with one second left on the 4-on-3 disadvantage.
Caporusso padded Michigan's lead to two, 3-1, at the 11:52 mark in the third period. Senior captain and defenseman Chris Summers (Milan, Mich.) blasted the puck from the left point, but his shot hit David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) and bounced to freshman right wing A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) positioned in the high slot. The rookie shoveled the puck along to Caporusso, who snagged the puck outside the crease and flicked it into the cage.
Wisconsin responded about three and a half minutes later to bring the team within one, 3-2. After a Wolverine got the puck out of the U-M left corner, Davies stole it at the bottom of the left faceoff circle and then threw it toward the crease. Center Derek Stepan was all alone atop the crease when he took his shot, making it next-to-impossible for Hogan to stop it.
Wisconsin pulled its goalie in the final minute and picked up a power play with 18 seconds remaining. Hogan stood tall and made two saves in the final moments to clinch the Saturday night win.
The Wolverines will go on the road next weekend (Dec. 4-5), playing two games against Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. ET, while the puck is slated to drop at 8:05 p.m. ET next Saturday.
