COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Despite a 45-20 shot advantage, the University of Michigan ice hockey team fell 5-3 at Ohio State on Friday (Dec. 4) at Value City Arena. Tied 2-2 in the third period, the Buckeyes scored at 12:41 and 14:59 to go up 4-2. Left wing Carl Hagelin's (Sodertalje, Sweden) power-play goal with 3:04 left in the game gave Michigan a chance, but OSU scored an empty-net goal with 35 seconds on the clock. OSU goalie Cal Heeter made 42 saves in the win.
Ohio State scored two goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. U-M bounced back with second-period goals by center Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and right wing Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) to knot the game at 2-2, but the Buckeyes regained control with the third-period markers.
Ohio State took a 1-0 lead at 5:52 of the first period, seven seconds after U-M had killed an OSU power play. Michigan's defensive coverage broke down when the Wolverines turned the puck over behind their net. Buckeye Sergio Somma slid the puck out front for Peter Boyd to lift over goalie Bryan Hogan's (Highland, Mich.) right shoulder.
OSU went ahead 2-0 at 18:16 on a slow-developing rush. Buckeye Zac Dalpe eluded a check outside the U-M blue line and coasted down the left wing. Dalpe's crossing pass seemed to be neutralized by back-checking center Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario), but Somma gathered the puck and pushed it over the goal line on his backhand.
Glendening scored at 11:32 of the second period to cut the deficit to 2-1. The alternate captain picked up the puck at the U-M blue line and lugged it down the left side. Unable to make a centering pass, Glendening sent a hard backhand shot high over Heeter's right shoulder.
Brown made it 2-2 at 15:12 on a goal with the teams skating four on four. U-M peppered Heeter with three point-blank shots from the right side before Brown banged the puck between the goalie's pads.
Michigan held a 27-11 shots-on-goal advantage through 40 minutes of play.
Both teams had great chances in the third period. Halfway through the final stanza, right wing A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) deked around the defense but was turned away by Heeter. Seconds later, Caporusso's shot from the doorstop was denied.
At 12:41, OSU won a faceoff back to Devon Krogh and the defenseman hit the top-right corner of the net from the right point to put the Buckeyes ahead for good. C.J. Severyn's marker from the low slot at 14:59 proved to be the game-winning goal.
U-M had the opportunities it needed to tie the game in the final minutes. OSU was called for penalties at 15:12 and 15:48, giving U-M a two-man advantage. Hagelin brought U-M to within one goal, 4-3, at 16:56. Still on the power play, Treais was stoned on a back-door feed at the left post at 17:25.
Michigan controlled the puck in the OSU zone in the final minute until a bouncing pass hopped over a defenseman's stick and eventually led to an empty-net goal with 35 seconds left on the clock.
Michigan looks to earn a series split on Saturday (Dec. 5) when it returns to Value City Arena to face the Buckeyes. Faceoff is set for 8:05 p.m. Pay-per-view streaming video coverage is available on bigtennetwork.com.
