SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) with a 1-1 tie against San Diego on Sunday (Sept. 7) at Torero Stadium. Junior/sophomore Matt Schmitt(Muskegon, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) scored for the Wolverines and senior/junior goalkeeper Patrick Sperry(Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) made one save for the Maize and Blue.
Michigan struck first on a diving header by Schmitt at the 26:07 mark. Senior Michael Holody(Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) won the ball, started in transition for the Wolverines and played to senior Jake Stacy(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) in the left corner. Stacy made a cut around one defender and curled a cross into the box where Schmitt connected on a powerful diving header into the back of the net to give Michigan a 1-0 lead.
Michigan took the lead to halftime but San Diego evened the score 7:53 into the second half on a goal by Kyle Ochoa.
The Maize and Blue had the better of the play, outshooting the Toreros, 12-5, but the Wolverines were unable to break the deadlock in the remaining 37 minutes of regulation. Michigan continued to push for a winner in overtime, earning three corner kicks during the extra session but could not find a goal and the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
U-M will be back in action on Friday (Sept. 12) when it hosts Illinois-Chicago. The match between the Wolverines and the Flames will be played at Eastern Michigan's Scicluna Field in Ypsilanti, Mich. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game... "It was a game where we felt that we deserved a result, but you have to give San Diego credit for having the fight and resolve to comeback and earn a tie. We are disappointed with it, but we did accomplish the objective of coming out to California and picking up a few points. I thought we were the team that looked more dangerous and created more chances. We did a good job defending, with the exception of their counter-attack goal; it was unfortunate that we didn't get a victory."
