MUNCIE, Ind. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team earned its most dominant victory in four years, scoring seven times in the second half en route to 10-0 victory overSaint Louison Saturday afternoon (Sept. 13) at Ball State's BSU Turf Field. The win, which featured goals from seven different U-M players, evened Michigan's record to 3-3 on the season.
Michigan dominated the play throughout both halves of the contest, recording 32 total shots, including 25 on goal, while limiting the Billikens to just a pair of shots on goal. Three U-M players earned multi-goal efforts to lead the Maize and Blue, while nine different Wolverines recorded at least one point in the victory.
Senior back Sarah Wilhite(Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS) headlined the Wolverines' performance for the second time in as many games, registering a career-best effort with two goals and two assists. After assisting on the Wolverines' early two markers, Wilhite scored one of her own in the waning moments of the first half -- at 34:46 -- on a broken U-M penalty corner. After inserting the ball and racing to the front of the cage, Wilhite was in perfect location to get her stick on the rebounded direct shot, corralling the ball and knocking it back into the goal. Wilhite scored again on a solid solo effort at the 40:48 mark, carrying the ball into the circle from midfield and, when the SLU defenders stayed with the forwards and did not challenge, blasting high to the right side of the cage.
Senior forward Stephanie Hoyer(Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) also tallied a pair of goals, including the first goal of the contest at the 9:52 mark. Wilhite set up the game-winning tally with the ball near the top of the scoring arc on a U-M surge. The Wolverine back rifled the ball across the circle to Hoyer -- her fellow captain -- who tipped it past starting Billiken goalkeeper Alex Labarge from the right-side post. Hoyer also scored the first goal of the second half -- just 1:52 into the frame -- during a flurry succeeding a U-M penalty corner. Sophomore midfielder Meredith Way's (Newmantown, Pa./Warwick HS) direct shot hit the SLU goalkeeper and bounced out in front, where Hoyer slammed it back into the cage.
Freshman forward Jess Allen(Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) recorded the most productive game of her brief collegiate career, scoring Michigan's final two goals in the last eight minutes of regulation play. Allen's first marker -- the second goal of her collegiate career -- came on a sweeping shot from the left side of the circle at the 62:00 mark, and she followed just six minutes later with a heads-up play in front of the Billiken cage for her second tally. Sophomore forward Zara Saydjari(Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan HS) carried the ball one-on-one into the circle with Allen on her heels, and when the former tripped up, the U-M rookie picked up the ball and knocked it in.
Senior/junior Paige Pickett(Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal School of Dallas) and sophomore/freshman Christi Barwick(San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) combined for the shutout victory, each facing one shot during 35 minutes of play. For Saint Louis, Labarge and Deem combined for 15 saves in the losing effort.
The Wolverines (3-3) will wrap up their four-game road swing next weekend when they head out to Storrs, Conn., for a pair of non-conference slates. U-M will face Albany at 3 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 19) before squaring off against host Connecticut at noon on Sunday (Sept. 21).
