HOUSTON, Texas C The University of Michigan volleyball team moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-12) sweep of Texas-San Antonio on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 30) at the Rice University Mizuno Invitational.
U-M posted a .440 hitting percentage (48-for-91) in the match, the highest total since a .351 performance at Wake Forest September 1, 2007. Junior Juliana Paz(Porto Alegre, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) and senior Beth Karpiak(La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) led the way with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while sophomore Lexi Zimmerman(Barrington, Ill./Barrington) dished out a season-high 39 assists and the Wolverine defense came up with 42 digs, led by freshman Sloane Donhoff's (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) career-high 14.
The U-M frontline of defenders also stepped up its play, combining for 14 block assists and seven team blocks. Seven different Wolverines got into the act, with freshman Courtney Fletcher(Duluth, Ga./Northview) leading the way with three.
The Wolverines came out and struggled to find a rhythm in set one, falling behind in the early stages before riding the hot hand of Karpiak, who posted the first four U-M points and finished set one with six kills on 10 attempts. The U-M defense struggled early, allowing UTSA to hit at a .306 clip, but returned to form midway through the opening frame with Donhoff leading the resurgence with seven of Michigan's 14 digs. U-M also posted three team blocks in set one.
In set two, U-M came out with a much faster tempo, building a 9-4 lead early and increased the advantage to 10 points, 20-10, behind Paz and fellow junior Veronica Rood(Temperance, Mich./Bedford). The duo combined for nine kills as five Wolverines teamed up for 17 terminations and an astounding .452 hitting percentage, a sharp contrast to the Roadrunners' .091 (8-for-33) performance. The future of the U-M program also got into the act as freshmen Claire McElheny(Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf Prep) and Alex Hunt(Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph) tallied five points between them. Not lost in the efficiency increase was the performance of Zimmerman, who dished out 16 assists to build her total to 28 through two sets.
The momentum seized by U-M in set two carried over into the final frame as the Wolverines raced out to an 11-5 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 25-12 win. U-M's brilliant hitting display continued, going 17-for-26 for a season-high .556 hitting percentage. Seven different Wolverine attackers posted terminations, led by Bower and Paz with four apiece. UTSA also helped the Michigan cause, hitting just .045 from the floor and .165 for the match.
Michigan concludes play at the Rice University Mizuno Invitational later today (August 30) when it faces host Rice at 7 p.m. CDT.
