SALINE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team opened the 2008 campaign with a 4-3 victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay on the Saline Hornets Stadium Field on Friday (Aug. 29) in the first leg of the Michigan/Oakland Invitational. Junior Peri Marosevic(Rockford, Ill./Edison Academy) tallied the game-winning goal, his second of the night, only 15 seconds after the Phoenix evened the game at 3-3. His other score came off of a header to claim the Wolverines second marker of the match. Senior Jake Stacy(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) also tallied one goal to move into fifth place on the U-M career points list.
Michigan struck quickly when senior Santos Perez(Troy, Mich./Athens) drew a free kick that Stacy converted into a 1-0 lead. Stacy buried his shot inside the far bar from 25 yards to give the Wolverines the early advantage at 3:01.
The Wolverines added to their lead at 34:31 on a redirected marker off the head of Marosevic to go up by a 2-0 score. After stringing together several passes to switch the field, the ball reached the foot of junior Mauro Fuzetti (Houston, Texas/Stratford) who lofted a cross toward the penalty spot and Marosevic redirected it into the back of the cage.
After relinquishing two goals in the second half, U-M reclaimed the lead, 3-2, in the 70th minute on a penalty kick conversion. Senior Michael Holody(Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) led to his left, duping Phoenix goalkeeper Adam Stikl, and then placed the ball down the middle. Wisconsin-Green Bay leveled the teams at 3-3 in the 79th minute, but the deadlock only stood momentarily as only 15 seconds after the re-start kickoff, sophomore Matt Schmitt(Muskegon, Mich./Reeth- Puffer) slid in a pass from the wing that found Marosovic, who drilled the game-winner into the bottom right corner.
The Wolverines welcome Oregon State as part of the Michigan/Oakland Invitational on Sunday (Aug. 31) at 12:30 p.m. on the Saline High School Hornets Stadium Field in Saline, Mich.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the team's response to each UWGB goal... "Sometimes that is an issue from the neck up and if you could video tape what's going on in guys' minds, I think you would see there were some good things on our minds each time we got scored on today."
On the play of Peri Marosevic... "Peri can be a special player at times and he is starting to season up which is great in that manner. Here is a guy that can hold the ball, he can bring a lot of players into a play, he does a lot of the work tracking, knows how to run in space -- all of the things that we rate forwards on and I thought he did a good job tonight."
U-M Junior Forward Peri Marosevic
On rebounding from the late surge from UWGB... "We learned from this game. We usually aren't a team that lets in three goals. Our defense is, I would say, one of the top in the nation with leaders like Julian Robles and (Michael) Holody. It was a tough game. I think that (Tosiant Ricketts) did a great job moving around and taking advantage of his opportunities. But our defense will definitely take care of us. As soon as (Ricketts) scored, we brought everybody together and the defense took charge. They said 'we're sorry, but we've got to keep play'."
