Tuesday, August 19 --Alexander Sitompul and Lion Kim played well on the prestigious Pinehurst Courses No. 2 and No. 4, but were unable to advance to match play at the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship in Pinehurst, N.C. Sitompul tied for 109th with a 147 stroke play total after posting rounds scores of 74 and 73, while Kim tied for 161st with a 149 36-hole total after tallying rounds of 73 and 76. Tuesday-Thursday, Aug. 12-14 -- Michael Slovitt finished tied for third with a three-under 285 tally at the Illinois State Amateur Championship at Cantigny Golf Course in Wheaton, Ill. Slovitt, who posted rouds tallies of 71, 71, 71, 72, gave medalist Zach Barlow (72-67-71-71/281) a strong run throughout the final 36 holes, but was unable to close the gap after Barlow played one-under golf throughout his final eight holes to maintain his lead and to take the Amateur title. Monday-Tuesday, Aug. 11-12 -- Former Wolverine Brian Ottenweller was the medalist runner-up with a 204 54-hole total at the 87th GAM Championship at the Orchard Lake Country Club in Orchard Lake, Mich. After opening with a four-under 68 in the first round and following with a five-under 67 in the second round, he held the lead after 36-holes. In the final round Ottenweller close witha three-under 69 and lost by a single stroke after medalist Jimmy Chestnut, a former MSU golfer, closed with a six-under 66 giving him a 203 tournament finish. Tuesday, August 5 -- Lion Kim earned medalist honors after total of 132 (64-68) at the Battleground Country Club in Tennet, N.J. to qualify for the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held at Pinehurst Courses No. 2 and No. 4 on August 18 - 24, 2008. The Wolverines will now have to competing in the event after Alexander Sitompul qualified on July 29 in Dearborn, Mich. [Results]
Tuesday, July 29 -- Alexander Sitompul used a sectional round tally of 138 (67-71) at the Dearborn Country Club to qualify for the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held at Pinehurst Courses No. 2 and No. 4 on August 18 - 24, 2008. Former Wolverine Brian Ottenweller had rounds of 73 and 72 for a 145 total at his U.S. Am qualifier at the Boyne Resorts, Heather Course (July 24), but did not advance missing by two strokes. Billy McKay was also at the Boyne qualifier and did not advance after posting a total of 154 (78-76). [Results]
Friday-Saturday, July 18-19 -- Using a final round 64, former Wolverine Andy Matthews vaulted himself to a third place finish at the 2008 Michigan PGA Boyne Tournament of Champions at Boyne Mountain Resort, Alpine Course. Matthews, who plays on the Canadian Tour, closed with a nine-under 207 54-hole total after rounds of 70, 73 and 64. He won $4,000 for his third place finish. Former Wolverine Randy Erskine was also among the field and tied for 48th at 221 (73-71-77). [Results]
Wednesday-Saturday, July 16-19 -- Former U-M golfer Tim Schaetzel continued his summer play tying for 21st with a four-under 284 total at the 102nd Southern Amateur Championship at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Orlando, Florida. After taking the first day lead with a seven-under 65, he posted back-to-back even par 72s to remain among the top 15. He closed with a 75 to give him a final four-under 284 total and a tie for 21st finish. [Results]
Monday-Sunday, June 23-29 -- Former U-M golfer Justin Hicks won the Nationwide Tours Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic at the Georgian Bay Club in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada. Hicks made par on the first playoff hole to beat Casey Wittenberg and claim the $144,017 first prize. Hicks shot rounds of 70-63-67-69 (-16). His 63 on Friday included a seven-birdie front nine 29. With this win Hicks has moved up to 13th place on the Nationwide Tour money list. The top 25 players at the end of the Nationwide Tour season earn their PGA Tour cards. Wednesday-Saturday, June 25-28 --Former U-M golferTim Schaetzel tied for seventh with a 274 total at the 2008 Dogwood Invitational at the Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. After opening with a 65 on Wednesday, he followed with a 66on Thursday to sit with the tournament lead at 131. After a 71 in Friday's third round and a 72 in Saturday's final round, he closed with the 274 total and the top 10 finish.[Dogwood Site|Scores]
Tuesday-Friday, June 17-20-- The 97th Michigan Amateur Championship, held at the Moors Country Club in Portage, Mich., teed off its play with four Wolverines qualifying for match-play. Nick Pumford finished seventh with a 146 total (72-74), while incoming freshman Matt Thompson was 32nd (77-74/151) and Billy McKay was 52nd (75-80/155). Brian Ottenweller (79-78) used a playoff to advance to the match play bracket after tying for 62nd with 10 other players with a 157 total. Pumford opened his match-play with a comeback 1 up win over Jared Vosler, before moving on in the second round with a 6&4 win over Brian Coffman. Pumford lost 5&3 to Steve Cuzzort ending his match-play run. Ottenweller advanced in his first match against Brian Hayward, 2&1, and won 6&5 against Andrew Walukonis in the second round. Ottenweller was eliminated 1 up to Nathan Gunthorpe in the quarterfinal. McKay lost his first round match to Luke Sniegowski, 2 up, and Thompson was eliminated in the first round against Walukonis, 1 up. [Amateur Site|Match Play Bracket]
Tuesday-Friday, June 17-20 --After using rounds of 76 ad 74, Ross Millman tied for 30th with a 150 total during stroke play qualifying of the Missouri Amateur Championship at WingHaven Country Club in O'Fallon, Mo. With his 36-hole total, he advanced to match play. In his opening match he defeated Severiano Smith, 1 up, but lost in the field of 32 1 up to Andrew Hatten ending his match-play run. Monday-Thursday, June 16-19 -- After carding rounds of 74 and 76, Bill Rankin ended up in a 16-way tie for 49th place in the 36-hole stroke play portion of the Amateur Championship at Turnberry in Scotland. With the 150 tally, he qualified for the 64-player match play bracket. He defeated James Gill of New Zealand, 2&1, in round one of match play Wednesday (June 18) before losing in Thursday's (June 19) second round match to Maximilian Kieffer of Germany, 2 holes. Thursday-Sunday, June 12-15 -- Former Wolverine Justin Hicks took his second U.S. Open appearance by storm ending the first day with the tournament lead after shooting a three-under 68. Starting on the back-nine for the first round, Hicks posted six birdies and three bogey's to make the turn three-under. Seven pars on the front side helped him maintain his pace as he closed with the three-under 68 to claim the first day honors. Unfortunately in the second round he posted an 80, but was able to advance making his first cut in a major with a six-over 148 total. Friday and Saturday, June 6-7 -- Incoming freshman Matt Thompson made it back-to-back state championships after he won the 2008 Lower Peninsula Division 2 Boy's Golf individual title with a 145 total after carding rounds of 72 and 73 at the Eaglecrest Golf Club in Ypsilanti, Mich. With that individual performance, Thompson helped lead his Battle Creek Lakeview team to a Division 2 team title after he and his teammates posted a 10-shot win with a 623 team total (308-315). Monday, June 2 -- Former Wolverine Justin Hicks was among 23 U.S. Open qualifiers after posting a 139 36-hole total (69-70) at the Columbus, Ohio, Sectional qualifier played at OSU's Scarlet Course and Brookside Golf & Country Club. With his 139 total, he was among 10 players vying for the final seven spots. Hicks birdied the first playoff hole to earn a berth in the 156-player field. This will be his second U.S. Open. He also qualified for the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. Also at the Columbus Sectional was Bill Rankin, whoshot a 75 on the Scarlet Course and followed with a 74 at Brookside to tally a 149 36-hole total and did not advance to the PGA event. Teammate Nick Pumford served as Rankin's caddy at the event. Tuesday, May 27-- Incoming freshman Matt Thompson fired a 70 to claim medalist honors at his Michigan Amateur Championship qualifier at the Highlands Golf Club in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Maize and Blue have five players among the amateur field. Nick Pumford, who shot a 74, earned his way into the championship with a medalist runner-up finish at his qualifier held at the Washtenaw Country Club in Ypsilanti, Mich. (May 5). Bill Rankin, Brian Ottenweller and Billy McKay were exempt from qualifying. The 97th Michigan Amateur will be played Tuesday through Saturday (June 17-21) at the Moors Country Club in Portage, Mich. Monday, May 19 -- Bill Rankin earned co-medalist honors at his U.S. Open local qualifier with a three-under 69 at Maumee Bay State Park in Toledo, Ohio. He will play in a June 2 sectional qualifier in Columbus, Ohio. U-M coach Andrew Sapp fired a 71 atMaumee Bay and tied for fourth. He will the be first alternate from the Toledo qualifier after missing out on the final qualifying spot in a three-way playoff. Other U-M players at the qualifier included Alexander Sitompul (tie-8th, 74), Brian Ottenweller (tie-10th, 75) and Billy McKay (tie-18th, 77). [Results]
Monday, May 19 -- Lion Kim and Tim Schaetzel each shot 77 at the U.S. Open local qualifier at Country Club of Detroit in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. They were two shots out of a playoff for the final qualifying spots. [Results]
Wednesday, May 14 -- Ross Millman advanced to U.S. Open sectional qualifying by carding a 74 in his rain-delayed local qualifier at Gateway National Golf Links in Madison, Ill. He will play in a June 2 sectional qualifier at Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta, Mo. [Stories:May 14|May 15]
Tuesday, May 13 -- Nick Pumford posted a 73 to finish in a four-way tie for ninth at his U.S. Open local qualifier at Red Tail Golf Club in Avon, Ohio, but missed a playoff for the final qualifying spot by one stroke. [Results]
