DES MOINES, Iowa -- Fifth-year senior Stann Waithe(Towson, Md./Loch Raven HS) was the lone competitor for the University of Michigan men's track and field team Friday evening (June 13) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and missed qualifying for the 400-meter dash final after posting the 15th quickest time during the semifinals at Drake Stadium on Jim Duncan Track.
Waithe took the inside lane on the track in the first heat and could not catch the pacesetters, registering a time of 47.19 to claim eighth place in his heat. Waithe was behind through the first 300 meters and trimmed the lead around the final bend and down the homestretch, but it was not enough. Jordan Boase of Washington (45.23) and Lionel Larry of Southern California (45.68) separated from the lead pack to finish first and second, earning automatic advancement to the final round.
This marks Waithe's final individual event as a Wolverine. He will leave Michigan with the fourth fastest 400m time in school history (46.15), which he set in the same meet in 2006.
The Wolverines will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, June 14) for the final day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Waithe and the 4x400-meter relay team will race in the event final at 4:48 p.m. CDT at Drake Stadium. The meet will be televised on CBS with live coverage beginning at 3 p.m. CDT.
