KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Sophomore Frank Shotwell(Medina, Ohio, Medina HS) set a new personal record and posted an NCAA provisional mark of 7,077 in the decathlon Thursday afternoon (April 10) at the Sea Ray Relays on Tom Black Track. Shotwell's fourth-place finish was good enough for second all-time in U-M history, passing Dave Hall (7,034 in 1985) and trailing only Sean Clancy (7,147 points, 1993).

Shotwell began the decathlon Wednesday (April 9) in five events -- the 100-meter dash (782), long jump (668), shot put (612), high jump (661) and the 400-meter dash (790) -- to accumulate 3,513 points to sit in seventh place.

Shotwell got off the blocks strong Thursday (April 10), finishing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (14.81) and the discus throw (137-5) to gather 1,576 points. He then finished tied for second with three other competitors in the pole vault with a mark of 14-11 for another 775 points.

Shotwell entered the final two events 1,283 points from setting a new school record but fell short 70 points, placing 10th in the javelin (153-11) and fourth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:41.67 for a total of 7,077. Shotwell did surpass his previous record of 6,644 that he set last year in the same meet.

The Wolverines will split meets the rest of the week, as a portion of U-M will compete at the Sea Ray Relays Friday and Saturday (April 11-12) on Tom Black Track in Knoxville, Tenn. Michigan will also send several members of the team to compete in the Spartan Invite Saturday (April 12) in East Lansing, Mich. Both meets are slated to begin at 9 a.m.
