
Davis' Top-Five Finish Leads U-M to Third Place in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Despite a fifth-place individual finish from senior co-captain Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS), the University of Michigan women's golf team battled unfavorable weather conditions all tournament long and was unable to maintain its tournament lead, but the Wolverines posted a 309 final-round team total Saturday (March 15) to finish third with a 920 54-hole total at the Gainesville Shootout III played at the University of Florida Golf Course.
The Wolverines opened the tournament with a 309 paced by an even-par and career-best-tying 70 from Davis, and followed with a 302 team total in the second round after a 74 from junior co-captain Lydia Benitez Colon (Dorado, P.R./Pendleton School) and 75 from sophomore Andrea Ratigan (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) to move to the top of the leaderboard after 36 holes with a 611 total. The Maize and Blue played hard in the final round, but U-M was unable to recover from miscues, posting a 309 to drop to a season-best third-place finish with a 920 total.
Using a 301 final team tally, Illinois jumped from third to first and claim the team title with a 916 event total (309-306-310). Texas State (301-313-304) maintained its spot it held after 36 holes to finish as the runner-up at 918, while U-M was third at 920.
Leading the Wolverine charge was Davis, who posted a season-best fifth place individual finish with a season-best 224 finish. Opening with an even-par and career-high-tying 70, she battled rain conditions in the second round carding a 79. She closed with a solid 75 in severe windy conditions to close as the top Wolverine with a 224 event total.
Sophomore Ashley Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) posted her fifth top 20 finish of the season as she closed with a 230 tournament total. After opening with a 76, she tallied back-to-back 77s to earn a tie for 14th place finish. Freshman Min Yean Tan (Queensland, Australia/Hills International College) continued her consistent play as she tied for 24th with a 233 total. After opening with an 81, she rallied in the next two rounds, carding back-to-back 76s.
Other Wolverine finishes include: Ratigan, tied for 36th at 238 total (82-75-81), Benitez Colon, tied for 38th with a 239 total (84-74-81) and freshman Louisa Shu (West Bloomfield, Mich./Birmingham Seaholm), who played as an individual, tied for 32nd with a 237 total (79-80-78).
The Wolverines will be off for a few weeks for heading back west to Tucson, Ariz., Saturday and Sunday (March 29-30) for the 2008 Mountain View Challenge. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Mountain View Golf Club.

• With the third-place finish at the Gainesville Shootout III, Michigan posted a season-best team finish. Prior to the top three finish, the Wolverines had a season-best fourth place showing twice this season -- Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 8-9) and Wolverine Invitational (Sept. 29-30).
• Lindsay Davis closed as the top finishing Wolverine in a tournament for the third time this season.
• Lindsay Davis tied her career-best single round tally, and posted a season-best, with an even-par 70 in the first round of the Gainesville Shootout III. The tally equaled her one-under 70 she has in the second round of the 2006 Wolverine Invitational (Sept. 30-Oct. 1).
• Using her career-best-tying 70 first round tally, Lindsay Davis set a season-best 54-hole tournament total with a 224 total at the Gainesville Shootout III. She topped the 227 total she had twice this season -- Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate (Oct. 15-17) and the Central District Classic (Feb. 18-19).
• Ashley Bauer started her 20th straight tournament for U-M at the Gainesville Shootout III. She has yet to miss a start for U-M during her career. Lindsay Davis has started her last 11 straight events. In addition to Bauer and Davis, Lydia Benitez Colon and Min Yean Tan have started all eight tournaments this season.
