ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior/junior Shakir Edwards(Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King HS) won the 60-meter dash and sophomore Frank Shotwell(Medina, Ohio/Medina HS) set a personal record in the high jump to lead the No. 21-ranked University of Michigan men's track and field team Saturday (Feb. 23) at the Harold Silverston Invitational in the U-M Indoor Track Building. With the Big Ten Indoor Championships looming next weekend, many of the Wolverines' top competitors did not compete in the Silverston.
Shotwell finished fifth in the high jump (6-5 1/2), surpassing his previous best of 6-4 by an inch and a half. Junior/sophomore co-captain John Kipf(Monroe, Mich./St. Mary Catholic Central) took second (6-9 1/2) in the high jump behind Derek Watkins of Toronto Track Club (7-1 1/2).
The day began with the U-M men's and women's track and field teams coming together on the track with family members to remember Joi Smith, a member of the Wolverine women's team who passed away in November after a courageous nine-month battle with cancer.
To begin the competion three Wolverines competed in the weight throw as junior/sophomore Brendan Lodge(Narragansett, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) and senior/junior Dan Bedoya(Muskegon, Mich./Reeths-Puffer HS) finished fourth (58-5) and fifth (58-3 1/4), respectively. Junior/sophomore Vince Belitsos(Leonard, Mich./Oxford HS) placed seventh (55-3 1/2), and junior/sophomore Sean Pruitt(Cato, Wis./Valders HS), competing unattached, won the event with a mark of 61-5 3/4.
To finish the field events in the pole vault Michigan stuck two in the top 10 as Shotwell finished seventh (14-3 1/4) -- two inches shy of a new personal record -- and freshman Taylor Voice(Boyne City, Mich./Boyne City HS) took ninth (13-9 1/4).
Moving to the track redshirt freshman Nicholas McCampbell(Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech HS) finished second (8.16) in the 60-meter hurdles followed by freshman Carl Buchanon(South Bend, Ind./Clay HS) in third (8.25).
The Wolverines then took the top two spots in the 60-meter dash as Edwards snapped the tape with a season-best 7.03 to edge sophomore Kyle Terpak(Riverview, Mich./Riverview HS) by one one-hundredth of a second.
A group of Wolverines competed in the final two individual track events to end the day as junior/sophomore Roger Billhardt(Elmhurst, Ill./York HS) took second (1:20.77) in the 600-meter run and was followed by a pair of freshmen, David St. Amant(Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) and David Sweeney(Oswego, Ill./Oswego HS), in fifth (1:21.63) and sixth (1:22.29), respectively.
In the 800-meter run redshirt freshman Peter Christmas(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) led the way for the Maize and Blue, crossing the line fourth (1:58.21), while junior Justin Switzer(Waterford, Mich./Kettering HS) finished fifth (1:59.11).
The Wolverines will travel to Madison, Wis., next Saturday and Sunday (March 1-2) for the Big Ten Indoor Championships. Events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. CST both days.
