"It is a great honor to be recognized by the AVCA with this award," said Zimmerman. "There are so many talented volleyball players across the country and I feel honored to be viewed in the same group with them. It is nice to be recognized for the hard work I have put in this season and throughout my volleyball career. It is also great for our program because without talented players and coaches around me, individual honors like this would not be possible."
A starter in every match since arriving on campus, Zimmerman led the Big Ten Conference in assists, finishing the season with 1,410 helpers while piloting the Wolverine attack to one of the top-five hitting percentages in the conference. Her stellar play produced first team All-Big Ten and AVCA All-Region accolades. Zimmerman broke Michigan's single-season assist record in her freshman campaign with 1,685 helpers and her 3,095 career assists rank fourth on the school's all-time assists list.
"It is such a great honor for her to be selected," said head coach Mark Rosen. "Every sport selects its All-America team differently, but the volleyball process is extremely selective.
"She has had such a great season this year, building on her impressive freshman season and has consistently proven to be one of the best players in the country. We are very proud of her. She is a worthy selection."
This latest award adds to the career accolades of the decorated sophomore, who earned AVCA Mideast Region Freshman of the Year honors a year ago. She became just the second U-M player to earn repeat selection to the All-Region first team and is highest ranked All-America selection since Erin Moore's third team nod in 2003.
The Wolverines finished the 2008 campaign 26-9 overall and 12-8 in Big Ten play, and concluded their record-setting season with the program's second straight NCAA Sweet 16 appearance after placing fifth in the Big Ten standings. The team's 26 wins are the second-most in program history and the most under Rosen.
