ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team could not hang onto its halftime advantage as Miami (Ohio) tallied three unanswered goals to claim a 3-2 overtime decision on Friday afternoon (Oct. 31) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
The RedHawks scored twice -- within a 26-second window -- during the final 14 minutes of regulation play to knot the score at 2-2 before Courtney Fretz recorded the gamewinner on a 2-on-1 break just 2:18 into the overtime stanza.
U-M had held a two-goal advantage until the 56:32 mark when Kate Synder put Miami on the board with a low shot past Wolverine sophomore/freshman goalkeeper Christi Barwick(San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) following a broken RedHawk corner. Maggie Marcum evened the score just 26seconds later -- at the 56:58 mark -- taking a goal-mouth pass from Mary Hull, who created a breakaway opportunity off the midfield restart, and tapping it in from the left-side post.
Sophomore/freshman Zara Saydjari(Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan HS) netted both of the Wolverines' first-half tallies for the first multi-goal effort of her career. She gave Michigan the initial lead at the 9:25 mark, battling for a ball in front of the Miami cage before banging it to the back of the net. Senior Stephanie Hoyer(Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) started the play at midfield, carrying the ball down the left side of the field and into the circle before dishing a pass to Sayjdari in front.
Saydjariconnected for her second goal seven minutes later -- at 16:27 -- on a reverse shot from the top of the circle. The rocket shot defeated MU goalkeeper Abbey Huck low to the left-side corner.
The RedHawks outshot Michigan 15-10, including a 12-5 advantage in the second half, and outcornered the Wolverines 8-4. Splitting time in the Michigan cage, senior/junior Paige Pickett(Dallas, Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas) recorded one save in the opening frame, while Barwick made eight stops in the second half. Miami also played two goalkeepers in the winning effort; Huck made no saves in the first half, while Kelsey Dean stopped all three U-M shots on goal in the final 37:18 to claim the victory.
The Wolverines will wrap up the regular-season portion of their 2008 campaign when they head to Iowa City, Iowa, on Sunday (Nov. 2) to face the No. 9-ranked Hawkeyes. The game is slated for a 2 p.m. CST start at Grant Field and will be aired live on the Big Ten Network.
