IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan field hockey team suffered a 3-0 loss at No. 9 Iowa in its final contest of the 2008 regular season on Sunday (Nov. 2) at the Hawkeyes' Grant Field. As a result, the Wolverines end the regular season with an 8-11 overall record and finish 3-3 in Big Ten Conference action.
Iowa struck in the closing minutes of the opening half, earning the only advantage it needed off a long-corner opportunity at the 30:12 mark. After collecting the play-in ball from the right sideline, Roz Ellis fed it forward into the circle and to the stick of Katie Naughton, who carried it to the center before blasting a reverse shot to the opposite corner of the cage, tucking it just inside the left goal post and past senior/junior goalkeeper Paige Pickett(Dallas, Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas).
Michigan responded with its best scoring chance of the contest when it drew a corner opportunity in the final minute of the frame, but Iowa goalkeeper Lissa Munley stopped the direct shot from sophomore striker Meredith Way(Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) and the Wolverines could not control the rebound as it kicked out to the left side of the cage.
The Hawkeyes added two more tallies early and late in the second frame to pad their advantage. Naughton netted her second marker of the contest at the 41:03 mark, taking advantage of a scrum in front of the U-M cage to push the ball into the lower-left corner. Lauren Pfeiffer initiated the play off a long corner, carrying the ball into the circle from the left side before directing it toward the goal. The ball was batted around for a moment on the right side of the cage, drawing Pickett out to challenge, before it kicked out to the left where Naughton tapped it into the unguarded nearside corner.
Lindsay Duffey wrapped up scoring at 61:49, using a reverse sweep to the lower-left corner to seal up her team's victory. After the ball entered the circle off a Hawkeye long-corner opportunity, the Wolverines' momentarily gained control, but their attempt to clear was intercepted by Meghan Beamesderfer, who fed the ball to Duffey to set up the marker.
The Hawkeyes outshot Michigan 14-2 -- posting a 10-0 differential in the second half -- and outcornered the Wolverines 6-2. Pickett earned seven saves in the Michigan cage, while Munley stopped both U-M shots on goal for the win.
The Wolverines will kick off the 2008 Big Ten Tournament on Thursday (Nov. 6) at IU Field Hockey Field in Bloomington, Ind. Seeded fourth in the annual conference tournament, Michigan will open first-round competition against Ohio State, the No. 5 seed, at 12:15 p.m.
