ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team dropped an overtime heartbreaker against Kent State on Sunday (Oct. 19), falling 1-0 to the Golden Flashes in front of 246 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Kent State's Carla Johl scored the game-winner 3:38 into the extra session, when she beat senior/junior Paige Pickett(Dallas, Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas) with the contest's lone shot on goal. The Golden Flashes controlled the ball in U-M territory early in the extra frame and, after failing on its second penalty-corner opportunity of the game, pushed play back into the Wolverine circle. Johl chipped a shot from the high right side of the circle to the opposite side of the cage, tucking it just inside the left goalpost to end the game.
Kent State, which did not claim its first shot until the game's 46th minute, outshot the Wolverines 5-3, including a 4-2 advantage in the second half, while corners were even at 2-2.
Sophomore Zara Saydjari(Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan HS), who netted Michigan's game-winner against Michigan State on Friday (Oct. 17), led the Wolverines with two shots, while sophomore Meredith Way(Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) notched another on a penalty-corner opportunity in the second half.
The Wolverines (8-8, 3-1 Big Ten) will hit the road next Sunday (Oct. 26), heading to State College, Pa., for a conference meeting against Penn State. The match is slated for a noon start at the Nittany Lions' AstroTurf Field.
