ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Head coach Andrew Sapp of the University of Michigan men's golf team announced Wednesday (August 8) the Wolverines' 2007-08 schedule. With 11 regular season tournaments on the schedule, the Maize and Blue play six tournaments in the fall season followed with six additional tournaments in the spring, including the Big Ten Championships hosted by Michigan State.
"This year's schedule is the best since I have been here," said Sapp. "It takes us all over the country while also concentrating on playing in the Midwest where the Central Regional will be as well at the NCAA Championship. We will face top competition in every event which will challenge our players and help them reach their individual goals and our team goals of making it to NCAAs."
The Wolverines will kick off the 2007-08 season with the 36-hole Purdue Midwest Shootout Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex's Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. The tournament will be an early look at the championship course which will host the 2008 NCAA Championships in late May.
Two days later, U-M will head 40 minutes south to Toledo, Ohio, for the Inverness Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 10-11, at the prestigious Inverness Club. The Maize and Blue will make its first appearance at Inverness since 2000, when former Wolverine Scott Hayes took medalist honors after a scorecard playoff. To close out September, the Wolverines will head to Indiana's Wolf Run Intercollegiate for the second straight year. The 2007 tournament will be played Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22-23, at the Wolf Run Country Club in Zionsville, Ind.
In October, U-M will head to Northwestern's Windon Memorial Classic Sunday and Monday, Oct. 7-8, at the Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill., followed with a trip to Palm Springs, Calif., Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 15-16, for the Prestige at the PGA West, Norman Course hosted by Stanford and UC-Davis. To close the fall season, the Wolverines will head to Florida and host the 2007 Wolverine at Mission Inn Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 5-6, at the El Campeon Course at Mission Inn in Howey in the Hills, Fla.
The Wolverines will open the spring season with a trip to Phoenix, Ariz., for an alumni match Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008. The site is still being finalized, but the current team will face former players in the annual match-play battle. After the match, U-M will head south for the Puerto Rico Classic for the sixth straight season. The 54-hole tournament will once again be played at the Rio Mar Country Club River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Sunday through Tuesday, Feb. 24-26.
After a nearly three week break, U-M continues its spring season, playing at Mercer's Linger Longer Invitational Friday through Sunday, March 14-16, at the Reynolds Plantation and Reynolds Landing course in Greensboro, Ga. A second three week break for the Wolverines will close with a trip to Columbia, Mo., Monday and Tuesday, April 7-8, for the Missouri Tiger Intercollegiate at The Club at Old Hawthorne.
With the spring season close to its finale, the Maize and Blue will head to Big Ten country, as the Wolverines will head to Ohio State's Robert Kepler Intercollegiate Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13, at the Scarlet Course, which will also be the host site for the NCAA Central Regional. Two weeks later, U-M will head to the 2008 Big Ten Championships Friday through Sunday, April 25-27, at Michigan State's Forest Akers West Course in East Lansing, Mich.
In a new twist this season, the Wolverines will play an addition tournament following the Big Ten championships, as they will head to Ardmore, Okla., for Oklahoma's The Maxwell Saturday and Sunday, May 10-11, at Dornick Hills Country Club.
If U-M qualifies and earns a selection, the Wolverines will head back to Columbus, Ohio for the NCAA Central Regional Thursday through Saturday, May 15-17, at OSU's Scarlet Course. If the Wolverines can finish with a top eight team spot, they will advance to the NCAA Championships at Purdue's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex's Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind., Wednesday through Saturday, May 28-31.
