ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Severe cold conditions and snow Saturday (April 7) have kept the University of Michigan baseball team from opening the home portion of its Big Ten schedule with Minnesota for the second straight day.
The Wolverines (16-6, 4-0 Big Ten) will try to get in two games against Minnesota (17-6, 2-1 Big Ten) with a doubleheader (one nine-inning game and one seven inning game) on Easter Sunday (April 8, 11:30 a.m.) at Ray Fisher Stadium. According to Big Ten rules a conference series of four games must be played within three days.
The scheduled starters for the Wolverines against Minnesota on Sunday are sophomore RHP Zach Putnam (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) at 4-2 with a 1.95 ERA in the opener and senior RHP Andrew Hess (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central HS) at 3-0, 3.08 in the second game.
The last time the Wolverines had a home Big Ten series shortened by weather was the Ohio State series in 2005, when the only game played was an 11-3 Wolverine win in the Friday night series opener (April 22, 2005), the first night game played at Fisher Stadium. The game was televised nationally on ESPN.
Michigan has already lost a game to the weather this season, playing just two of three games scheduled in the series at East Carolina (March 16-17).
