YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team had a huge day Saturday (April 22) at the Eastern Michigan Invitational at Olds/Marshall Track. The Wolverines were able to capture five NCAA Regional qualifying marks and six victories as well 11 career bests.
Sophomores Lex Williams (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) and Justin Switzer (Waterford, Mich./Kettering) and junior Mike Woods (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest) each grabbed a regional mark in the 1,500-meter run. Williams, who placed third (3:42.38), and Switzer, who finished fourth (3:45.32), both clocked personal records in the event. Woods took seventh place, clocking 3:46.97 in his first race of the outdoor season.
In the hurdle events, junior/sophomore Dan Harmsen (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) and senior Jeff Porter (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) each improved on his regional qualifying time. Harmsen won the 400-meter hurdles by clocking a career-best 51.92, and freshman Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) took third (53.35). Porter won the 110-meter hurdles with a season-best 13.96, just 0.04 shy of his personal best (13.92).
Sophomore Andre Barnes (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) and senior John D'Arcy (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) each narrowly missed out on earning a regional mark. In the 400-meter dash, Barnes took second place with a career-best time of 47.27, just 0.07 off the regional standard of 47.20. Also setting a personal record in the event was junior Andrew Wechter (Shelby, Ohio/Shelby), who crossed the line in 47.73 to take fourth place. D'Arcy just missed in the 800-meter run, winning with a career-best time of 1:50.50. D'Arcy's mark was just 0.10 short of the regional standard (1:50.40).
Sophomore Adam Harris (Wheaton Ill./Wheaton North) had a strong day, winning one event and placing runner-up in another. Harris won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.62, while he fell just 0.03 seconds shy of first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.75.
The Wolverines captured victory in both of the relay events. The squad of Shotwell, Porter, Barnes and Harris won the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 41.12, just under a half-second shy of the regional mark (40.66). Barnes also ran on the winning 4x400-meter relay team along with Harmsen, D'Arcy and Wechter.
Other Wolverines falling just short of victory were freshman Grant Till (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), who took second in the javelin throw (181-0); fifth-year senior Andrew Bauer (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser), who crossed the line second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase; sophomore/freshman Brendan Lodge (Narragansett, N.J./Bishop Hendricken), who placed third in the hammer throw (177-10); and sophomore/freshman John Kipf (Monroe, Mich./St. Mary's Catholic Central), who took fourth in the high jump (6-6).
The Wolverines will split the squad next week and travel to both the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., and the Hillsdale Relays in Hillsdale, Mich. Both meets will be held Thursday through Saturday (April 26-28).
