GLENCOE, Ill. -- For the second tournament in a row, missed opportunities in the final round stymied the University of Michigan men's golf team, as the Maize and Blue closed with a 294 final team round Monday (Oct. 8) to finish tied for fifth at the Windon Memorial Classic at the Lake Shores Country Club.
The Wolverines got off to a strong start, opening with an even-par 284 total in Sunday's (Oct. 7) first round. Michigan was led by freshman Alexander Sitompul's (Jakarta, Indonesia/Bradenton Prep) four-under 67, and fellow freshman Lion Kim's (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary Prep) one-under 70.
Powered by junior Bill Rankin's (Traverse City, Mich./Central) two-under 69 in the following round, U-M finished with a solid 288 second-round tally to sit in third after 36-holes. In the final round, miscues and poor putting left the Wolverines with a 294, forcing U-M to close in a tie for fifth with SMU. Even with the disappointing final round, Michigan managed to post a season-best 866 54-hole total.
The freshmen duo of Kim and Sitompul led the charge as they tied for 22nd with career-best 216 totals. Kim opened with a career-best one-under 70 and followed with rounds of 74 and 72. Sitompul blazed through the first round, carding a four-under 67 before he fell off the pace with totals of 74 and 75 to close the tournament.
Rankin tied for 31st with a 219 total. After a 77 in the opening round, he came back to fire a two-under 69 in the second round, and Rankin closed with a two-over 73. In his first start of the season, junior Nick Pumford (St. Charles, Mich./St. Charles) tied for 38th with a 221 total (71-72-78), and senior co-captain Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) tied for 43rd with a 223 total (76-73-74).
Senior co-captain Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) traveled as an individual and tied for 22nd with a season-best 216 total. He posted three straight rounds of 72.
Using a final round five-under 279, host Northwestern was able to leap frog first day leader Kent State, as the Wildcats made up a 10-shot difference to win the team title by a single stroke. Northwestern (285-284-279) rallied to post a final team total of 848, topping the Golden Flashes (282-277-290) by one shot. Indiana used a final round six-under 278 -- the best closing round team score of the day -- to finish third with an 855 total (284-293-278). Individually, Minnesota's Clayton Rask (75-66-65) and Marquette's Mike Van Sicke (70-70-66) tied for medalist honors with seven-under 206 totals. Northwestern's Dan Doyle was third at 208 (69-71-68).
The Wolverines will have a week of preparation before they head to the west coast to Palm Springs, Calif., Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 15-16) for The Prestige. The 54-hole tournament, hosted by Stanford and UC-Davis, will be held at the Norman Course at PGA West.
