Wolverines Complete Second Day With Four Victories

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan mens track and field team finished the second day of competition at the Indiana Gladstein Invitational at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse. The meet was held on a 200-meter banked track.
Freshman Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) came into the day in second place of the heptathlon standings through four events. Shotwell placed second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.55) and third in the 1,000-meter run (2:50.87) to help him earn a first place finish with a total of 4,824 points. The point total is the third highest in U-M school history in the event.
In the 200-meter dash, senior Stann Waithe (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) captured a victory for the Wolverines when he crossed the line in 21.65. Sophomore Adam Harris (Wheaton, Ill./North) finished in ninth place with a time of 22.00, while sophomore Andre Barnes (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) took 17th (22.29)
Fifth-year senior Andrew Ellerton (Sudbury, Ontario/Confederation) earned his first victory of year after sitting out last season, winning the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.51. Sophomore Lex Williams (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) was not far behind, taking seventh (1:54.43). Sophomore Mike Luginbill (Troy, Mich./Troy) and freshman Ciaran O'Lionaird (Cork, Ireland/De La Salle) finished 13th (1:55.77) and 18th (1:57.43), respectively, in the event.
Senior John D'Arcy (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) was a fraction of a second short of capturing his own victory in the 600-meter run. D'Arcy clocked 1:18.85, just .38 seconds behind winner Ricardo Bell. Freshman Ricky Fleming (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) took 11th in the event (1:22.89).
Michigan also saw success in the relay events, winning the 4x400-meter relay and placing runner up in the distance medley relay. The 4x400-meter relay team of junior/sophomore Dan Harmsen (Rockford, Mich./Rockford), Barnes, D'Arcy and Waithe were victorious, clocking a time of 3:12.97. In the distance medley relay, the team of sophomore/freshman Sean McNamara (Elmhurst, Ill./York), freshman Kyle Terpak (Riverview, Mich./Riverview), sophomore Justin Switzer (Waterford, Mich./Kettering) and sophomore/freshman Brandon Fellows (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) took second place, recording a mark of 10:01.95.
Other Wolverines that performed well were sophomore/freshman Chris Baldwin (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeiew), who took sixth in the pole vault (14-7 1/4), Adam Harris, who took 10th in the long jump (22-4 1/2), and fifth-year senior Paul Sarantos (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) and sophomore Sean Pruitt (Cato, Wis./Valders) who took ninth (52-8) and 10th (52-7 1/4) in the shot put, respectively.
The Maize and Blue travels to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Meyo Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2-3, at the Loftus Center. Friday's action begins at 5 p.m., while Saturday is slated to start at 10 a.m.
