Dore, Schaetzel Shine on Day One of Home Tournament

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With a four-under-par 138 total for 36 holes from senior Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's) and a three-under 139 total from junior Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy), the University of the Michigan men's golf team sits just four strokes behind Wisconsin after Saturday's (Sept. 16) first day of the 2006 Wolverine Intercollegiate at the U-M Golf Course.
The host Wolverines opened their own tournament with a tournament-best six-under 278 in the first round to take a two-stroke lead after 18 holes but slipped in the second round, posting a six-over 290 to drop to the second position with an even-par 568 total for 36 holes. The Maize and Blue trails first-day leader Wisconsin by just four strokes after the Badgers posted rounds of 285 and 279. Missouri (288-282) and Oregon State (280-290) are both tied for third at 570.
Individually for the Wolverines, Dore, Schaetzel and sophomore Nick Pumford (St. Charles, Mich./St. Charles HS), who is playing as an individual, are among the top 10. Dore is tied for fourth with a four-under 138 total after tying his career best with a three-under 68 in the first round and following with a 70. Schaetzel is tied for seventh at 138 after rounds of 69 and 70 on the 6,704-yard, par-71 course.
Playing just his second collegiate event, Pumford finds himself tied for fourth with a 138 total. He posted seven birdies en route to a career-best four-under 67 in the first round. In the second round he stayed hot with five more birdies to fire an even-par 71. Overall, he leads the tournament with his 12 birdies.
As for the rest of the Wolverine starters, junior Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) is tied for 31st with a 145 total. He opened with a two-under 69 and posted a 76 in the second round. Sophomore Bill Rankin (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) is tied for 49th with a 148 total after back-to-back rounds of 74, and senior Will Kendall (Gerrards Cross, England/Oundle School) is tied for 71st at 153 (72-81).
In addition to Pumford's individual play, five other Wolverines are playing as individuals. Senior Matt McLaughlin (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS) is tied for 31st with a 145 total (72-73), freshman Michael Slovitt (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS) is tied for 49th with a 148 total (71-77), senior Brian Schielke (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) is tied for 58th with a 150 total (77-73), freshman Billy McKay (Grand Blanc, Mich./David Leadbetter Golf Academy [Bradenton, Fla.]) is tied for 73rd with a 154 total (75-79), and freshman Ross Millman (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day) is 80th at 166 (83-83).
Oregon State's Mitch Gillis leads the tournament with a seven-under 135 total. After posting the second best all-time round at the U-M Golf Course with a six-under 65, he followed with a 70 to hold a two-stroke lead. Wisconsin's Garrett Jones (70-67) and Missouri's Peter Malnati (70-67) are tied for second at 137.
The Wolverine Intercollegiate concludes with a final 18 holes Sunday (Sept. 17) beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
