ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team added seven names to its incoming freshman list, head coach Ron Warhurst announced on Wednesday (July 19), providing the Wolverine program with several standout performers and greater depth in all competitive areas.
Nicholas McCampbell (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech HS) swept the hurdle competition at the 2006 Michigan state championships, capturing titles in both the 110-meter and 300-meter events. He also took fourth place in the high hurdles as a junior and owns a personal best of 14.15 in the event. McCampbell set a new city record in the 300-meter intermediates with a time of 37.33 and recently competed in the 110-meter event at the 2006 USA Junior Championships.
Joining McCampbell in the sprint/hurdles group are Ricky Fleming (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS), who claimed third place in the 400-meter dash at the 2006 Michigan state championships, and Matt Wheeler (Menlo, Calif./Atherton HS), a 2006 California state qualifier with personal bests of 14.55 in the 110-meter hurdles and 38.45 in the 300-meter intermediates.
A distance specialist, Peter Christmas (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) did not lose a race at 800 meters or above his entire senior year until the Michigan state meet, where he claimed runner-up honors in the 1,600-meter run. During the fall cross country season, he won his regional competition and led the Pioneer squad to second place at the state championships, earning all-state honors with a 10th-place individual showing. Michael Dobmeier (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North HS) also boasted a standout high school career in cross country, earning a pair of section titles and a fourth-place finish at the 2004 New York state meet. As a senior, he placed 17th in the state championships with a personal-best time of 15:55.1.
Entering the Wolverines' field-event corps will be high jumper Andrew Schrotenboer (Holland, Mich./Holland HS) and javelin specialist Grant Till (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS). A 2006 Michigan state qualifier, Schrotenboer established a new high jump standard at Holland High School with personal-best clearance of 6-7. He took seventh place in the 2005 state indoor meet. At Michigan, Schrotenboer will likely expand his specialty to the multi-events. Till recently competed at the Nike Outdoor Nationals and owns a personal best of 167-11.
