SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- University of Michigan junior Michael Whitehead (East Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area HS), a member of the Wolverine men's track and field team, captured the bronze medal in the triple jump at the North American, Central American, Carribean (NACAC) Under-23 Track and Field Championships, held July 7-9 at Panamerican Stadium.
The Wolverine, who recently earned his first career NCAA All-America citation with a runner-up finish at the national outdoor meet in June, posted a best jump of 52-0 to take the third spot among the talented 10-man field. Whitehead registered the mark during the preliminary series of jumps and held his ground despite a pair of fouls in the final. Fellow American representative John Tremidara took fourth place with a distance of 51-8 1/4.
Started in 2000, the NACAC Athletic Association's Under-23 Championships are held every two years in one of the 32 member nations of the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association, one of six regional athletics associations affiliated with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Whitehead is the second Wolverine student-athlete to compete at the NACAC event, joining former distance standout Mike Wisnieski, who won the 2002 half-marathon competition.
