INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- University of Michigan junior Michael Whitehead (East Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area HS), just over a week removed from a career-highlighting performance at the NCAA Championships, was selected to represent the United States at the 2006 North American, Central American, Carribean (NACAC) Under-23 Track and Field Championships, scheduled for July 7-9 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Superseding a tumultuous season of injury and frustration, Whitehead earned NCAA All-America distinction for the first time in his collegiate career by claiming runner-up honors in the triple jump at the national outdoor meet, held June 7-10 in Sacramento, Calif. Whitehead shattered his personal best in the event when he posted a jump of 53-11 1/4 on his fifth attempt, adding 16 inches to his own U-M school outdoor record. With the performance, Whitehead became the first Wolverine competitor to capture All-America status in the triple jump in Michigan's 105-year program history.
More than 400 athletes from 28 countries are estimated to compete this year at the Panamerican Stadium. Started in 2000, the NACAC Athletic Association's Under-23 Championships are held every two years in one of the 32 member nations of the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association, one of six regional athletics associations affiliated with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
The U.S. Under-23 team was chosen based on the most recent USATF and Track and Field News rank-order list for all age-eligible athletes, who, according to NACAC regulations, must be 20, 21 or 22 years old during the 2006 calendar year. Only two athletes per event were eligible for selection to the U.S. team provided they meet the necessary qualifying standards. The standard for the triple jump was 49-2 1/2.
