Michigan Head Coach Cheryl Burnett
On tonight's game ... "We knew Miami would come in feeling very confident. They've had a great non-conference season. We knew they were a very athletic team. We had four goals heading into this game. We wanted to cut down our turnovers, we wanted to stop their dribble penetration, we wanted to block out and we wanted to make sure we guarded ball screens extremely well, both from the post position and the perimeter. Renee Taylor and Maurita Reid came into the game scoring big numbers, and we wanted to cut down on Taylor's three-point attempts. Jessica Minnfield and Janelle Cooper made an incredible difference in the game by limiting those two players to just one three-point basket. We have to give credit to our post players as well. We worked a lot against the press yesterday in our one day of preparation, and I thought our kids did a fabulous job of handling the basketball. It's a good win for us."
On winning despite the early foul trouble from the post players ... "The great thing is that we have a lot of personnel that we can use. I thought Katie Dierdorf's confidence offensively late in the game really made a huge difference. Janelle Cooper's offensive decisions and her aggressiveness and confidence emulates through the team. Jessica Minnfield played the entire game tonight, and that's pretty tough considering our 'NBA' schedule. As worn out as I am, I can't imagine how worn out our kids are from playing so many games. This is a great tribute to them, coming off a tough loss to Notre Dame. I've talked about how resilient this team has been with coming back the next practice or next game and being able to shrug off whatever disappointments we've had. I think it's due to great leadership. Our captains, Krista Clement and Janelle Cooper, do a great job of talking to our team and getting them ready to do what we need to do the next day, the next play, or the next practice."
On looking towards the next week ... "The thing that I always look toward is simply the next practice and the next game. We're giving our team the day off tomorrow, which is something I don't like to do two days before a game. The schedule has been pretty rough, and it gives them a day to focus on academics. We have one day to prepare for another good opponent on the road. The only important thing for us is the next practice and the next opponent."
