Tim Miller's assist on the Wolverines' first goal of the night was the 15th helper of the sophomore's career. He now has 16 assists in his time with U-M.
Andrew Cogliano's first goal of the game was the 20th in his time with the Maize and Blue. With his three-goal performance, the sophomore now has 22 career goals.
Cogliano has posted a point for Michigan in eight of its last nine contests, dating back to the Wolverines' victory over Michigan State on Nov. 4. He has a 7-6-13 line during that time.
Cogliano, the lone goal scorer for Michigan tonight, recorded the first hat trick of his career. He had previously notched two goals on three occasions. The three-goal performance was Cogliano's first multi-goal game of the season.
With his assist in the first period, Matt Hunwick recorded his 58th helper, moving him into a tie with Blake Sloan (1994-97) for 18th place on U-M's all-time defenseman assists list. The senior blueliner needs just one more assist to nudge him into a three-way tie for 16th place.
Western Michigan's power-play goal in the second period snapped Michigan's penalty-killing streak. U-M had successfully killed off its previous 23 chances, dating back four games to the series finale at Ferris State on Nov. 18.
Kevin Porter extended his career-high point streak to 12 games with his assist against the Broncos. The run has spanned three months, and he has accumulated an 11-12-23 line. Porter's streak is the longest by a Wolverine since the 2000-01 season when Andy Hilbert (2000-01) rattled off points in 16 consecutive games, earning a 16-18-34 total from Nov. 11, 2000 through Jan. 27, 2001.
T.J. Hensick pushed both his assist and point streak to six games with his second-period dish. He has earned a 3-7-10 line in the span.
Both Hensick and Porter have each managed to tally at least one point in all but one contest this season. Both have scored in 15 of Michigan's first 16 games.
Michigan held the Broncos to just 18 shots, the lowest number of shots allowed by the Maize and Blue defense this season.
In seven career games against Western Michigan, Matt Hunwick has collected five assists.
Michigan's winning streak at Yost Ice Arena ended at 15 games with the loss to WMU. The last home loss to Broncos occurred on Oct. 20, 1995. Furthermore, the Wolverines had won six consecutive games against the Broncos prior to tonight's contest.

Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the momentum in the first period ... "I think the one thing that we've been good at this year is having a good start. We just didn't have a good start tonight. We've had a good first period most nights, and tonight, we just weren't sharp. We gave up the first goal again, and we got that goal back. But we weren't playing the kind of hockey in the first period that we needed to play. The second period, we gave up goals too easily, and all the sudden, we were two goals behind. We tried to climb back in, and we couldn't quite make it."
On what went wrong ... "Our goals weren't going in. Some nights they go in, and some nights they don't. That's why defense is so important. That's why we can't give up those easy goals. In the meantime, we're giving up too many quality chances. From our standpoint, it wasn't a good game; from their stand point, it was a great game."
On Andrew Cogliano's hat trick ... "Cogliano had a strong game, and he was going to the net. We had players having good games, but our team didn't have a good game. If I look around the locker room, and I can find one, two, three, or four players who didn't play well, I'll guarantee we won't win. It doesn't matter who they are."
Senior Defenseman Jason Dest
On Western Michigan's resiliency ... "When another team scores like that, right after you, it takes the life out of you. It's hard to get the team going again especially when they're clogging up the neutral zone. We had trouble getting into the zone. Then they scored the fifth goal, before the empty netter, and that broke our backs."
On the importance of tomorrow's game ... "We were hoping to have a better game after the bad loss against Minnesota. We didn't get that. Now, the only focus for us this weekend is tomorrow night. We can't go through what happened tonight again. We'll try to come out with a better game at Western and salvage the weekend for ourselves."
Sophomore Forward Andrew Cogliano
On the outcome of the game ... "I think we just took them lightly. They've been off for two weeks and they scheduled their game with us so they could be in their best condition. They obviously showed that they came here for a purpose to get two points, and they did that."
On his third goal of the night ... "It gave us another life with that goal. On that power play, we had a few good chances to score, and we didn't. I think the third one brought the team a lift, but we couldn't bury it."
On Michigan's scoring chances ... "We kept hitting the posts or missing the net. I think we moved the puck well, and we just tried to get the puck and crash the net. We were doing a pretty good job, but the pucks just weren't going in."
