The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team (1-2, 1-0 Big Ten) will host two dual meets this upcoming weekend at Canham Natatorium. On Friday (Nov. 10), the Wolverines face the Buckeyes at 5 p.m. On Saturday morning (Nov. 11, 11 a.m.), U-M will race against No. 24 Princeton.

Scouting the Opponents
Ohio State -- The Buckeyes won their only meet so far this season, defeating Illinois 157-143 on November 4. OSU is coached by eighth-year head coach Jeanne Fleck, who led the Buckeyes to a seventh-place finish at the 2006 Big Ten Championships. Edirne, Turkey, native Gulsah Gunenc is the top returning swimmer for Ohio State. At last season's conference championships, Gunenc missed a conference title by .28 seconds in the 200-yard butterfly with her runner-up time of 1:58.54. Michigan is 16-1 all-time against the Buckeyes, winning the past 12 meetings, including a 208.5-91.5 win last season.

Princeton -- The 24th-ranked Tigers open the season at Oakland on Friday before traveling to Ann Arbor. Princeton's roster includes Alicia Aemisegger, one of 19 early selections for the U.S. World University Games roster. Susan Teeter enters her 23rd season as the head coach of the women's swimming program. Teeter has over 150 dual-meet victories, including a school-record 47 meet winning streak that was snapped in 2004. U-M won the only other two meetings with the Tigers. Michigan took down Princeton 104-27 in the U-M program's fourth season in 1977-78, and won the last meeting in 1992-93 by a score of 219-80.

Michigan Remains 10th in National Poll
The Wolverines remain No. 10 in the most recent CSCAA national poll, released Monday (Nov. 6). U-M has had strong showings in losses to No. 2 Florida and No. 8 Georgia, and dominated Michigan State in its only meeting with an unranked opponent. Michigan holds the highest ranking of all Big Ten programs.

Near Misses Doom Michigan at Georgia
The Wolverines fell down 86-62 after day one of a two-day dual meet at Gabrielsen Natatorium against No. 5-ranked Georgia on Friday (Nov. 3). Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) was the only two-event winner on the day, claiming two NCAA 'B' cut times in victories in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:37.24) and 400-meter individual medley (4:57.42). Emily Christy (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford Area Senior) also earned a consideration win, touching the wall first in the 200-meter butterfly (2:18.51). U-M won the final event of day one, combining for an NCAA 'B' time in the 200-meter freestyle relay (1:45.60) to stay close in the standings. In two runner-up finishes, Michigan touched the in .50 seconds or fewer after the UGA winner.
On day two, Elyse Lee (Albion, Mich./Albion) won both diving events, posting zone-qualifying scores of 272.70 in one-meter diving and 310.87 in three-meter diving. Michigan got back in it, going 1-2 in the first individual event of the day -- the 1,650-yard freestyle. Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) claimed a first-place time of 16:30.81 and Emily Hanson (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) finished just behind her at 16:43.88. The Wolverines also got wins from Margaret Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) in the 100-yard butterfly (55.03) and Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.92). Each time surpassed NCAA 'B' marks.
Also on day two, Michigan missed first by .11 in the opening relay, the 200-yard medley relay. U-M then missed third by .04 and second by .32 in the 50-yard freestyle. The Maize and Blue continued its near misses, falling .47 short of first in the 100-yard backstroke and Mueller missing a top time by .05 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Overall, the Wolverines won 10 out of 19 events over the Bulldogs, but came up on the wrong side of too many bang-bang finishes to win the point battle over Georgia.

Lee Dominating Diving
Elyse Lee has earned the top Michigan score in all six diving events in this season's 2006 meets, including posting five winning scores and earning numerous zone-qualifying scores. The Albion, Mich., native took first in one-meter diving in the season opener against No. 2 Florida (Oct. 14), and has subsequently won four straight events, scoring first in the one-meter and three-meter against both Michigan State (Oct. 25) and No. 5 Georgia (Nov. 3-4).
Eight Wolverines Clip NCAA 'B' Marks
Eight Michigan swimmers have surpassed NCAA 'B' marks this season, as well as three different relays. The individual swimmers are as follows: Kaitlyn Brady (100-yard freestyle), Lindsey Smith (100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle), Emily Christy (200-yard butterfly), Hannah Smith (200-yard backstroke), Justine Mueller (200-yard IM, 400-yard IM, 200-yard breaststroke), Emily Brunemann (400-yard IM, 1,650-yard freestyle), Margaret Kelly (200-yard backstroke, 100-yard butterfly), and Emily Hanson (1,650-yard freestyle).
Relays that have earned consideration marks are the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay.
Michigan Earning Top Times, Scores
The Wolverines have claimed the top time or score in 30 of 45 events. U-M opened the season with eight of 13 wins against No. 2 Florida (Oct. 14), then had the best time or score in 12 out of 13 events against Michigan State (Oct. 25) and earned 10 wins out of 19 events against No. 5 Georgia (Nov. 3-4).
Justine Mueller and Lindsey Smith Like to Win
Justine Mueller and Lindsey Smith have each posted a win or a top time in all but one individual race this season. Mueller held a six-race winning streak heading into day two against the Bulldogs last Saturday (Nov. 4), but clocked in runner-up in the first of two races. Smith won all of her individual events heading into Friday (Nov. 3) against Georgia, but claimed second in the first race of the day before winning her only individual event (200-yard freestyle) on Saturday.
In addition, Mueller owns NCAA 'B' times in four events this season and Smith holds consideration times in three events.
Emily Brunemann, Lindsey Smith Nearly Qualify for NCAA's
Emily Brunemann and Lindsey Smith each posted times this past weekend against Georgia (Nov. 3-4) that would have qualified for the NCAA Championships according to last season's qualifying cut off. Smith touched the wall in 56.88 in the 100-meter freestyle, which equals 49:42 in the 100-yard freestyle. On the 2006 national psyche sheet, the cutoff to qualify in the 100-yard freestyle was 49.91, meaning Smith's time would have qualified. Brunemann earned a time of 16:30.81 in the 1,650-yard freestyle. The cut off time for the 2006 NCAA Championships was 16:32.70, meaning Brunemann's time would have made the national qualifying psyche sheet.
On the Horizon ...
The Wolverines will travel to College Station, Texas, next weekend for the three-day Texas A&M Invitational (Nov. 17-19) at the Student Rec Center Natatorium. Preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with the finals being swum at 6 p.m. The meet features six programs: Texas A&M, Michigan, Illinois, Louisiana State, Southern Methodist and Pacific.
