ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team completed a weekend sweep of the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks with a 5-1 triumph on Saturday (Nov. 11) at Yost Ice Arena. Eleven Wolverines notched a point, with Brandon Naurato (Livonia, Mich.) and Danny Fardig (Ann Arbor, Mich.) leading the charge. Naurato netted a pair of goals, with Fardig chipping in helpers on each.
Nebraska-Omaha had an early chance to break onto the scoreboard, but a heads-up play by Travis Turnbull (Chesterfield, Mo.) prevented UNO from putting the puck in the net. Scott Parse's initial shot was stopped by Billy Sauer (Walworth, N.Y.), but the rebound dribbled behind the net, where it was picked up by Bryan Marshall. The Maverick center carried the puck around the back of the net and, with Sauer scrambling to the other side of the crease and the goal mouth wide open, had the puck knocked away by Turnbull at the right post.
Michigan used the resulting momentum to its advantage, going up 1-0 at 7:38. Jack Johnson (Ann Arbor, Mich.) grabbed a Fardig feed, blasting a shot from the top of the slot. Jeremie DuPont sticked away the attempt, and Naurato scooped up the rebound and backhanded another try at the UNO netminder. That too was turned aside, but Naurato snapped his own rebound over the glove of DuPont for his third goal of the season.
A botched clearing attempt allowed the Maize and Blue to extend its lead to a pair of goals at 10:27. Chad Kolarik (Abington, Pa.) wristed a shot from the left faceoff circle that caromed off DuPont onto the waiting stick of Dan Knapp. Brian Lebler (Penticton, B.C.) picked off Knapp's dump, and the freshman forward directed a one-timer over DuPont's shoulder for the 2-0 Michigan lead.
The Wolverines widened the gap at 4:38 of the second stanza on David Rohlfs' (Northville, Mich.) sixth goal of the year. Jason Dest (Fraser, Mich.) shoveled a pass out of the Michigan end and onto the stick of Kevin Porter (Northville, Mich.). Porter carried the puck along the boards before dumping down to Rohlfs, stationed in the left faceoff circle. Rohlfs, wrapped up by a UNO defender, muscled his way around and lifted a shot that found the back of the net for the 3-0 edge.
Defense was the name of the game for the rest of the second period. After 40 minutes of play, Michigan outshot the Mavericks, 31-23.
Naurato's second goal of the night gave the Wolverines a four-goal lead. Fardig made a no-look pass from behind the blue line that connected with Naurato's stick. Naurato rifled a shot from the slot that lit the lamp for the Maize and Blue at 6:06 of the final period. Morgan Ward (West Redding, Conn.) also picked up an assist on the play.
Adam Bartholomay's goal 11 seconds later ended Sauer's shutout bid. Alex Nikiforuk found Parse waiting at the blue line, and Parse ripped a shot that was kicked aside by the U-M goalie. The big rebound was scooped up by Bartholomay, who deposited the shot in the back of the net at 6:17. The goal made the score 4-1 in favor of Michigan.
The Wolverines answered back, pushing their lead back to four goals at 8:14. Kolarik dished to Andrew Cogliano (Woodbridge, Ontario) at the top of the slot. Cogliano skated the puck behind the goal line and around the back of the net before threading a pass to Tim Miller (Davisburg, Mich.). Miller's shot beat DuPont for the sophomore's second goal of the 2006-07 campaign.
Michigan travels to Ferris State for its first road weekend of the 2006-07 campaign. Both games (Nov. 17-18) are slated to start at 7:05 pm.
