ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the first time in the University of Michigan women's golf program history, the Wolverines will have two representatives in the field at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship as Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS), who just completed her junior season, and Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), who finished her sophomore year, will play in the 105th U.S. Women's Amateur, Monday through Sunday, Aug. 1-7, at the Ansley Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga.
Schmucker played her way into the 156-player field by using her second straight competitive round under 70, with a three-under-par 69 at Brackett's Crossing Country Club in Lakeville, Minn., to win her sectional qualifier by two strokes. Broderick used an even-par 72 in her sectional qualifier at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis, Mo., to finish as the runner-up and garner a spot in the Amateur field.
This will mark the second straight U.S. Women's Amateur Broderick will play in. At last year's championship at the Kahkwa Club in Erie, Pa., she played her way into the match-play field of 64 after rounds of 77 and 76 for a 153 total, tying her for 39th. After she defeated Gina Umeck 4 and 2 in the first round of match play, she was eliminated by Morgan Pressel, 4 and 3.
It will also be the second U.S. Women's Amateur appearance for Schmucker, who competed in the 2003 event at Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa. Schmucker finished in an 11-way tie for 49th in stroke play qualifying (76-76/152) and was eliminated by Paula Creamer, 6 and 5, in the first round of match play.
By making the U.S. Women's Amateur field, it marks the second USGA event the Maize and Blue duo will play in this summer. Schmucker and Broderick will play in the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship, scheduled for July 11-16 at Swope Memorial Golf Course in Kansas City, Mo.
The U.S. Women's Amateur, the third oldest of the USGA championships, was first played in 1895 at Meadowbrook Club in Hempstead, N.Y. The event is open to any female amateur who has a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4. The Women's Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
The U.S. Women's Amateur will consist of two rounds of stroke play to determine a field of 64, who will then compete in a match-play format.
