IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 56 University of Michigan men's tennis team remained near the top of the Big Ten Conference standings after earning a resounding 6-1 victory over Iowa Sunday afternoon (April 3) at the UI Recreation Building. The Wolverines (11-7) claimed a sweep in doubles before posting five straight-set singles victories to seal the win and improve to 4-1 in league play.
Michigan's 43rd-ranked doubles tandem of sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and freshman Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) provided the early momentum, easily defeating Kyle Markham and Brett Taylor 8-2 at No. 1. Soon after, senior Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) and sophomore Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) clinched the first team point with an 8-3 decision over Chaitu Malempati and Bart van Monsjou at No. 2. Michigan's top two doubles teams both hold 4-1 records against Big Ten opposition in 2005.
Senior Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and sophomore Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) completed the doubles sweep with a gritty 8-6 triumph over J.P. Ritchie and Aaron Schaecterle at No. 3. With the win, Gossain and Peretz improve their dual match record to 6-4.
Maravic ended a three-match losing skid by blowing out Markham 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, while Heller earned his 10th victory of the dual match season with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Ritchie at No. 3. Competing in his first spring singles match since the 2003 season, Gossain overpowered Schaecterle 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 to clinch the team win for Michigan.
In his first career match at the No. 1 position, Hung posted a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Malempati to give the Wolverines a 5-0 lead in the match. Hung holds team-best totals in overall (17), regional (13) and dual match (11) singles wins in 2004-05.
Taylor outlasted senior David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 5 to spoil Michigan's attempt at an overall sweep, but Peretz ended things on a positive note with a 7-6(2), 6-3 victory over van Monsjou for his 10th win of 2005.
The Wolverines return home to host Purdue on Saturday (April 9) and Illinois on Sunday (April 10). Both matches are scheduled for a noon start at the Varsity Tennis Center.
