ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 65 University of Michigan men's tennis team picked up an important Big Ten Conference victory over No. 75 Purdue Saturday afternoon (April 9), defeating the Boilermakers 6-1 in its first outdoor competition at the Varsity Tennis Center this year. The Wolverines (12-7, 5-1 Big Ten) posted a sweep in doubles play and collected five singles wins to earn their first victory over Purdue (3-11, 0-5 Big Ten) since the 2001 season.
Teaming together for the first time this season, seniors David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) and Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) defeated Colin Foster and Scott Warner 8-4 at No. 3 to give U-M the early momentum in doubles. Sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and freshman Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) clinched the first team point with an 8-6 triumph over Sounak Chatterjee and Filip Koziell at No. 1. Hung and Maravic hold a team-best 9-4 record in dual match competition.
Playing at the No. 2 position for the first time this year, senior Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and sophomore Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) outlasted Eric Hodgman and David Robinson 8-5 to complete the doubles sweep for the Wolverines. With the win, the U-M pair improves to 7-4 in 2005.
Hung quickly closed out Chatterjee 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to earn his team-leading 18th victory of 2004-05 and give Michigan a 2-0 lead in the match. David Robinson kept the Boilermakers in contention with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Anving at No. 4.
In his first career dual match at the No. 3 position, Peretz collected a tough two-set victory over Koziell to put U-M on top 3-1. After surrendering a 4-1 lead in the first set, Peretz came on strong and won three straight games to take the first frame 7-5. He had little trouble in the second set, winning 6-2 to clinch his fifth victory in six conference matches this season.
Maravic made a tremendous impact in his return to the No. 1 singles slot, upsetting No. 77 Rose in straight sets to clinch the team win for the Wolverines. Maravic outlasted his opponent 6-4 in the first frame but fell behind late in the second set before forcing a tiebreaker. Rose was within two points (6-4) of sending the match into a third set, but Maravic took advantage of two key double-faults and was serving for the match at 8-7. Rose was unable to get his racquet on a blistering serve by Maravic, and Michigan celebrated its first victory over Purdue since Apr. 22, 2001.
With the outcome decided, the Wolverines closed out the match in winning fashion. Gossain defeated Hodgman in a super-tiebreaker at No. 6, 7-6(4), 4-6, 1-0(5), for his second straight victory. Fischer earned his 10th win of 2004-05 by earning a comeback win over Foster (5-7, 6-2, 6-4) at No. 5 to close out the match.
The Wolverines return to the Varsity Tennis Center tomorrow (Sunday, April 10) to host No. 2-ranked Illinois at noon.
