MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 56 University of Michigan men's tennis team suffered its first Big Ten Conference defeat of the season on Friday evening (April 1), losing 5-2 to No. 60 Minnesota at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Wolverines (10-7, 3-1 Big Ten) let the doubles point slip away before surrendering four straight matches in singles action. Michigan has dropped its last eight matches against the Golden Gophers (3-9, 2-1 Big Ten) dating back to the 2000 season.
The Wolverines gained the early advantage in doubles with a victory at No. 2, as senior Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) and sophomore Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) easily defeated D.J. Geatz and Andres Osorio, 8-1, to break a three-match losing streak. Nic Edlefsen and Raoul Schwark handed seniors David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) and Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) their first loss in six matches, 8-2 at No. 3, to even up things.
In the decisive match at No. 1, Michigan's No. 43-ranked pair of sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and freshman Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) jumped out to a 5-2 lead before Adrien Debreyne and Avery Ticer battled back to take the match in a tiebreaker, 9-8(8), and give the Gophers the first team point of the night.
Three straight-set singles victories clinched the team win for Minnesota. Gaetz posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over sophomore Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) at No. 5, while the 35th-ranked Ticer defeated No. 81 Maravic 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 to give the Gophers a 3-0 lead. Osorio provided the decisive victory at No. 3, defeating Heller 7-5, 6-1.
Debreyne kept the Wolverines off the scoreboard with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(5) win over Anving at No. 5. Michigan, however, ended the match on a strong note with back-to-back victories at Nos. 6 and 2. Fischer gave U-M its first point of the match with a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(7) decision over Schwark, while Hung improved to 7-1 in his last eight matches by outlasting Edlefsen 7-5, 7-5.
