Hung Out, Mazlin Alive in Consolations at Big Ten Event

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Junior Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team was eliminated in the round of 16 at the Big Ten Conference Singles Championship Sunday morning (Nov. 13) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
Hung, the fifth seed in the 64-player main draw, suffered a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 loss to No. 10 seed Dennis Mertens of Ohio State. Hung advanced to face Mertens after posting a pair of straight-set victories in the first and second rounds on Saturday (Nov. 12). With the loss, Hung moves his fall record to 5-4.
Meanwhile, one Wolverine is still alive in the consolation bracket. Freshman Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) earned three straight wins on Sunday to move into a semifinal showdown with Penn State's Michael James tomorrow (Monday, Nov. 14) at 9 a.m. After gutting out a tough 7-6(4), 7-6(5) victory over Purdue's Jarred Leibner to begin the day, Mazlin battled back to defeat Northwestern's Alexey Evstratenkov, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Mazlin then capped off a perfect day with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Penn State's Bradley Hunter to advance to the consolation semifinals.
Freshmen Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) split a pair of consolation matches on the third day of action. Aarts handed Iowa's Chaitu Malempati a 6-4, 6-3 loss before falling to PSU's Hunter, 6-1, 6-3.
