Last Time Out: Schaetzel Leads Wolverines at Memphis Intercollegiate
With just seven shots separating second to ninth, the Wolverines closed out the 2005 Memphis Intercollegiate (Oct. 3-4) with a ninth-place showing after an 888 54-hole total. The Maize and Blue tallied team rounds of 297, 300 and 291 throughout the tournament. Tim Schaetzel was a driving force for the Wolverines as he recorded his second straight top five finish as he tied exactly for fifth with an even-par 216 54-hole total (68-77-71). Brian Ottenweller (77-75-72) and Brandon Duff (79-70-75). Red Numbers Flood U-M Scorecards
Michigan continues to add up the red numbers on the scorecards. Through three tournaments in 2005-06, the Wolverines have 21 rounds under par with 11 rounds under the 70 stroke barrier. During the entire of the 2004-05 season, Michigan recorded 15 rounds under par and five under the 70 strokes
Top Spots Becoming the Norm
For the third straight tournament, Michigan has had at least one player finish among the top 10 individually. Most recently, Tim Schaetzel led the way for the Wolverines with a tie for fifth at the Memphis Intercollegiate. At the Wolverine Intercollegiate, Christian Vozza won his first collegiate title and at the Hawkeye Intercollegiate, Brandon Duff posted a career-best tie for seventh.
Schaetzel Coming Into His Own
With his tie for fifth at the Memphis Intercollegiate, Tim Schaetzel has posted back-to-back top five finishes in a tournament. Last week, he tied for fourth at the Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 24-25) at the U-M Golf Course. With his first round four-under 68 and his final round one-under 71, Schaetzel has shot five of his last six rounds under par. Last week at the Wolverine Intercollegiate, he was one of two players to record all three rounds under par as he posted a career-best five-under 67 and back-to-back one-under 70s for a career-best 207 54-hole tournament total.
Par Fives ... What Par Fives
For the second straight tournament, Tim Schaetzel led all tournament golfers on par 5 scoring. At the Memphis Intercollegiate he finished eight-under for a 4.33 par 5 average to lead all golfers. Last week at the Wolverine Intercollegiate, he was seven-under on par 5s for a tournament leading 4.22 average.
Duff Makes it Three Straight
With his second round two-under 70, Brandon Duff has posted at least one round under par in each of the three tournaments this fall. He had a two-under 70 (first round) and one-under 71 (third round) at the Hawkeye Intercollegiate (Sept. 10-11) and a career-best two-under 69 (second round) at the Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 24-25).
First in Four Years is Oh So Sweet!
Michigan's victory at the 2005 Wolverine Intercollegiate is the first team title for the program in four years. The last time the Wolverines hoisted a team trophy was in the 2000-01 season, when the Maize and Blue won the Wolverine South Invitational (March 3-4, 2001) at the Hunter Golf Club in Savannah, Ga. The Wolverines 839 54-hole team total smashed the program's top mark for a tournament tally by 16 strokes. The previous record was an 855 total at the 1992 Stanford Invitational (Oct. 17-19).
Team Record Round Scores Lead U-M to Victory
Michigan's first round tally of seven-under 277 at the 2005 Wolverine Intercollegiate set a new standard for a team single round tally. That record didn't last long, as the Wolverines bettered that round total with a nine-under 275 in the second round of the Wolverine. In fact, the Wolverines have never shot below 280 in a tournament. The top single round total by a Wolverine program was a 281 in second round of the 1999 Xavier Invitational (Oct. 11) and a 281 in the third round of the 2000 Dr. Pepper/Tanglewood Intercollegiate (March 25).
Vozza Gives First Individual Title in Four Years
Christian Vozza used three straight under par rounds to win his first collegiate event at the 2005 Wolverine Intercollegiate. He finished with a one-shot victory with a career-best 205 total (67-69-69). The last time a Wolverine has won medalist honors in a tournament was the 2001 Wolverine South Invitational (March 3-4), when former Wolverine Andrew Chapman secured his first win of his collegiate career with a rain-shortened 141 (72-69) 36-hole total.
Ottenweller Sets the Pace
Brian Ottenweller had back-to-back career-best four-under 67s in the first two rounds of the 2005 Wolverine Intercollegiate. His previous best performance was when he recorded back-to-back one-under 71s at the 2004 Radrick Farms Intercollegiate (Sept. 11-12). With his back-to-back 67s, Ottenweller shattered his career-best 54-hole tournament tally by nine strokes. He finished with a 208 total at the Wolverine Intercollegiate which topped the 217 he had at the 2004 Radrick Farms Intercollegiate. For the season, he is averaging 72.00 strokes per round.
Dore Hits Mark Again
With his second round two-under 69 at the Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 24-25), Kevin Dore now has four career rounds under the 70-stroke barrier. He had a career-best four-under 68 in the third round of the 2004 Big Ten Championships (May 9) at the U-M Golf Course. With his 214 54-hole total at the Wolverine Intercollegiate, he tied his career-best for 54-hole tournament total. He has two other occasions with a 214 total -- 2004 Big Ten Championships (May 8-9) and the 2003 Hoosier Invitational (Sept. 27-28).
