Schaetzel Leads Wolverines at Memphis Intercollegiate

CORDOVA, Tenn. -- As sophomore Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) posted his second straight top five individual finish, the University of Michigan men's golf team closed out with a ninth place finish today (Tuesday, Oct. 4) at the 2005 Memphis Intercollegiate at the Colonial Country Club South Course. As just seven shots separated second place from ninth, the Wolverines tallied an 888 54-hole total after rounds of 297, 300 on Monday's first day of play while closing with a final round 291.
For the second straight tournament, Schaetzel was a driving force for the Wolverines as he recorded his second straight top five finish as he tied exactly for fifth with an even-par 216 54-hole total. After he opened with a four-under 68, as he birdied all four par 5s, he found putting miscues in the second round he posted a five-over 77. He rallied in the final round again, as he birdied all four par 5s to close out with a one-under 71. With that final round tally, he has now shot under par in five of his last six rounds.
Sophomore Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) and senior Brandon Duff (Goodrich, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) both tied for the 33rd spot with 224 tournament totals. Ottenweller recorded three descending rounds after opening with a five-over 77, lowering it to a three-over 75 and closing out with an even-par 72. Meanwhile, Duff opened with a 79, only to come back and recover with a two-under 70 in the second. He closed out the tournament with a three-over 75.
Other Wolverine finishes include: junior Matt McLaughlin (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS), was 51st with a 229 total (78-78-73); senior Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist HS), tied for 52nd with a 230 total (74-80-76) and freshman Bill Rankin (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS), who competed as an individual, tied for 41st with a 226 total (75-78-73).
Memphis (291-288-297) used its home course to its advantage as the Tigers won their own tournament by five strokes with an 876 54-hole total. With only seven strokes separating second to seventh, Southern Mississippi (287-301-293) slid into the runner-up spot with an 881 total, while Wisconsin (302-295-286) was third at 883. The host Tigers also took advantage of medalist honors as Keven Fortin-Simard won with an eight-under 208 total (69-67-72), while Southern Mississippi's Justin Elliott (67-71-74) was the medalist runner-up at 212.
Michigan wastes no time getting back on the golf course as the Maize and Blue will head out at the end of this week to Fairfax, Calif., for the 2005 Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 10-11), hosted by the Pac-10s California. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Meadow Club.
