EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team suffered its second defeat of the Big Ten season with a 2-0 loss to Michigan State on Sunday (Oct. 16) on Old College Field. With the win the Spartans earned their first point in the Challenge Cup, yet Michigan is still in command of the fall session with 2.5 points.
The Spartans jumped to an early lead by scoring two goals in the opening half, the first at the 31:23 mark. Doug DeMartin began a counterattack by penetrating down the center channel of the field and slipped the ball to Ryan McMahen. McMahen was waiting to tee off on the ball from 19 yards out and beat senior Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) for his seventh goal of the season.
With 2:45 left in the half, the Spartans scored off another counterattack, this time coming from a Michigan corner kick. The play began when Ryan Dick played the ball out to Louis Stephens on the left flank, allowing Stephens to play the ball to Kenzo Webster. Webster outran the defense to get a one-on-one chance and beat Dzubay to the left from 16 yards out.
Down 2-0 coming out of intermission, the Wolverines attempted to make an answer of their own and took four shots on goal in the second half. The Michigan defense also intensified only giving up four shots in the second half, none of which were on goal.
The Wolverine defense only allowed four shots on goal -- all in the first half -- and Dzubay made two saves. Michigan State's Jason Tillman saved all six of Michigan's shots on goal.
The Wolverines will host the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers on Thursday (Oct. 20) at 5 p.m. on the U-M Soccer Field.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On what it will take to win on the road ... "First, let's give credit to Michigan State because they are a very good team and Ryan McMahen was special on the day. They caught us at the right time, and that's what we're trying to help our players fix, and that is our fear of failure, because this is a team that had high expectations and is dealing with those expectations going unmet. I think it's one of the most difficult things to deal with, when you have thoughts in your mind of the 'what ifs,' 'what if I fail in this situation' In a way, that's a self-fulfilling prophecy, and you do fail. But the great thing about sports is the fact that you have to learn how to cope with that failure and not focus on it and not be afraid of it. The coaching staff has an unwavering conviction that we are a good team. It really now is something that the leadership within the team has to pick up and address and get things back on track."
On the team's confidence from playing the next two games at home ... "No question it helps. We're hoping to get the M-Pire group put together for the last homestand. We realize we have two very good teams coming in to play against us, so we can't afford to look past them. But it certainly helps playing in that comfortable environment, because then you're not dealing with as many questions dealing with your individual confidence."
On what the key factor in the game was ... "Well, give Michigan State credit, they came out with the attitude to win the game, and we came out with the attitude of not losing the game, and that was the major difference. Once we were able to address it in the second half, we really had most of the play in the second half, and you see in the statistics, we had more of the run of play and some real good chances to score goals, but that was the difference in the game."
