Liz Andary is one of three freshmen that make up the list of newcomers to theU-M volleyball program. Liz was a Detroit News/FreePress First TeamAll-Metroselection in 2005 and earned MAC Red Division All-Conference first team honors as a senior. She holds school records for the most digs in a match and the most kills in a single game.
Liz is only one of seven Wolverines towear lucky number 13, but she's not the superstitious sort. Andary took time out of her schedule to share her thoughts on her final season in high school, talk about her parents and tell us all why she loves a really great kill.
On what the University of Michigan means to her...
"U-M is a balance of academic and athletic excellence with a beautiful nature setting."
On her biggest influences in life...
"My parents because they have always supported me through all of my decisions and have never forced me to choose something I didnt want for myself. Theyve always given me advice and support when I needed it. Also, theyre a perfect example of how a man and a woman can be balanced in the work force because my dad is an attorney and my mom is a judge."
On the challenge of balancing volleyball and athletics...
"The main challenge I amfacing is learning how to get my work done early so I wont run into time conflictions. I also have to learn how to study when traveling to our games."
On adjusting to college volleyball...
"The biggest challenges will be adjusting to the speed of the game and to the size and skill of the opponent. The blocks are going to be bigger, the passers are going to dig out more balls and the hitters are going to be stronger and smarter and thats something I am going to have to adapt to."
On the best thing about a big kill...
"The positive swing in the game that occurs after a big kill is great. The fans go crazy and it causes a chain reaction and the team starts playing well and scoring points."
On her first impressions of Cliff Keen Arena...
"I was amazed that it was an arena just for volleyball, without basketball lines, too. It was cool thinking how the volleyball team gets this gym to themselves and that there are only volleyball lines, making the court lines less confusing."
On the highlights of her high school career...
"When our high school volleyball team won our regional and advanced to the quarterfinals. Although we lost in a really tight match, it was just amazing to experience a quarterfinal match."
On the players who have helped her adapt at Michigan...
"Every one of the players on the team has been helpful in some way or another. It is nice to hear all of their individual freshman year experiences because it helps to know how they all handled the transition from high school to college, both academically and athletically."
