2005 U-M Women's Gymnastics Schedule
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics squad announced today (Monday, Aug. 2) its 2005 schedule, which features four top-10 teams, including two-time defending national champion UCLA.
The schedule is also highlighted by meets at No. 2 Georgia and No. 6 Utah, as well as the season opener against No. 10 Nebraska.
"Our scheduling philosophy is that you have to compete against the best to be the best," said eight-time Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year Bev Plocki, who enters her 16th season at the helm for the Wolverines. "Our main issue last season was consistency which makes every competition a key meet this season. We are excited to be hosting UCLA and Nebraska and having another opportunity to visit Utah and Georgia."
As well as competing against Big Ten foes No. 12 Iowa, No. 18 Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan State, U-M will face No. 23 West Virginia and New Hampshire and will compete in the Michigan Classic on the campus of Western Michigan against Michigan State, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and the host Broncos.
The first chance fans will have to see the Wolverines will be Dec. 12 in U-M's annual intrasquad meet at Crisler Arena.
The Wolverines open the season against No. 10 Nebraska (Jan. 7) before traveling to No. 6 Utah (Jan. 28) at the end of the month to face the nine-time national champion Utes, who ranked second in attendance (10,125 average) in the NCAA.
February begins with a bang when two-time defending national champion UCLA pay a visit to Crisler Arena on Friday, Feb. 4. The Bruins and the Wolverines set a Crisler Arena regular-season attendance record in 2001 when 3,854 fans cheered on two of the top gymnastics programs in the nation.
The highlight meet of March is a tough road trip to No. 2 Georgia on Saturday, March 12, to face the Gym Dogs, who have finished in the top three in the nation the last three seasons.
The 2004 Big Ten Championships meet is scheduled for Saturday, March 26, in Iowa City, Iowa, where U-M looks to capture its seventh conference title in a row.
The Wolverines finished the 2004 season with a 14-6 record and a 9-1 mark in conference while making their 12th straight NCAA Championships appearance. All-American Elise Ray (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake HS) looks to capture her fourth NCAA national title in her senior season, while All-Big Ten Conference second teamers Lindsey Bruck (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus HS), Becca Clauson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Jenny Deiley (Dayton, Minn./Elk River HS) look to build on U-M's No. 8 national finish in 2004.
