TRAINING LOG: June 14-20 Brannen and Willis wrapped up their three-week West-Coast tour in Eugene, Ore., where they would race in the prestigious Prefontaine Classic on Saturday -- Brannen in the 1,500 meters and Willis in the mile. Both athletes kept lower weekly mileages and tailored their workouts to best prepare themselves for race day. | ||||
"The week went pretty well; my foot's healing. It seemed like a long week; we were stuck in Eugene the whole time. It was a little bit boring, but I guess we were able to concentrate on running, which was the reason we were there. The weather was really nice out in Oregon; it was 80 and sunny, and it's usually rainy and in the 70s, so that was perfect all week. I went into the race not really knowing what to do. I kind of wanted to hang back, but halfway through it, I realized that my fitness level was a little bit higher than I had thought. I went out a little bit too easy, so with 600 left, I tried to press a bit and ended up catching the leaders by 100 to go. I'd given too much to catch them, and at that point they were starting their kicks, so I got beat over the last 100. Overall, it was definitely a positive race. I felt really good through it, and it's given me a positive attitude going into Europe next week." |
"The week was really long out in Oregon. The traveling life isn't all as glamorous as it's made out to be; it was pretty boring. We just hung out in the hotel, did a lot of training and got ready for the race. It was really hot out there, and I definitely suffered from that. I got pretty sick after the race on Saturday and had a really bad headache for a few days afterward. I didn't get my time, so now I have to fly off to Europe." |
