BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The University of Michigan softball team had its six-game win streak snapped this evening (Wednesday, Feb. 25) in a 1-0 loss in five innings at Florida Atlantic. The game was called with one out in the bottom of the fifth due to rain, but the game became complete when the Wolverines were set down in the top of the fifth. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled.
Michigan starter Nicole Motycka (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney HS) took the loss although the junior allowed just one hit in 4.1 innings of work. However, an unearned in the first was all the Owls needed to earn the win over the nation's seventh-ranked team. Tiffany Haas (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS) continued her hot hitting, going 2-3 for the Wolverines.
The game-winner came early when the FAU leadoff hitter in the bottom of the first reached on a bunt single and moved to second when Motycka's throw to first was off the mark. After a strikeout, Wolverine third baseman Grace Leutele (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena HS) committed the second error of the inning, allowing an unearned run to cross the plate.
Michigan's best threat came in the second when Motycka connected for a leadoff single and moved to third with two outs following a sacrifice and groundout. The threat ended on a Leutele popout.
Michigan moves to its last stop on the Spring Break trip at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. The Wolverines open pool play against Nebraska at noon Friday (Feb. 27).
