CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Two members of the University of Michigan men's tennis team competed in qualifying Monday (Oct. 4) at the 2004 Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships at the Champions Club, but neither was able to move past the first round of play. Sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) was ousted in the morning singles session, while Hung and sophomore Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) suffered a close defeat in doubles later in the afternoon.
Hung, the 17th seed in the 128-player singles qualifying round, fell behind early to Florida's Greg Oullette and never recovered in a 6-1, 6-0 loss. Hung and Heller fought point-for-point against Middle Tennessee's Marco Born and Andreas Silijestrom in the 64-team doubles bracket, but the Blue Raider tandem eventually prevailed 8-6.
The tournament is the first of three national championship events during the 2004-05 collegiate tennis season, with the other two being the ITA National Indoor Championships (Nov. 4-7) and the NCAA Championships (May 13-30).
The Wolverines continue the fall season by hosting the Wolverine Invitational next weekend (Oct. 15-17) at the Varsity Tennis Center.

On Michigan's performance at the tournament ... "I thought we started really well in doubles and came out with some good energy. I saw both of them improve on a lot of the things we've worked on the past couple of weeks and I was happy with the way they played together. Both guys are disappointed with the results, but it's all just a small step in what we're trying to accomplish in the long run."
