ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team completed the first day of competition at the 2004 Wolverine Invitational Friday afternoon (Oct. 15) at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M started the day with a pair of singles victories against Ohio State and ended with two doubles wins against Western Michigan.
In early afternoon singles action against the Buckeyes, the Wolverines dropped the first set in each of the matches en route to losses on five of seven courts. In his first collegiate match, freshman Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) provided Michigan with its first victory of day with a comeback win over Scott Green. After surrendering the first set in a tiebreaker, 6-7(2), Maravic stormed back to take the second frame by a 6-1 score. In the deciding set, the two battled point-for-point to force a second tiebreaker, and Maravic was eventually able to break Green's serve and blast a forehand down the right side to prevail 7-6(6).
The Wolverines earned their second win in the last match remaining on the court, as senior Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) also came back to defeat his opponent in three sets. Fischer rebounded from a 6-7(4) setback in the first set to win the two remaining frames, 6-4, 6-3, over Ohio State's Dominic Ozanne.
Following singles play, Michigan won two of three doubles matches in tiebreakers against the Broncos. Fischer and Maravic continued their winning ways with a tough 9-8(5) win over Jose Orozco and Jeff French, while seniors Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) outlasted Brady Crosby and Bryan Norville by a 9-8(3) score.
The Wolverines return to the Varsity Tennis Center tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 16) for the second day of competition. U-M will square off against Ohio State in doubles at 2 p.m. before facing Western Michigan in singles at 5:30 p.m.
