ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team finished the second day of action at the 2004 Wolverine Invitational with three singles wins against Western Michigan Saturday (Oct. 16) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Sophomore Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) made easy work of his opponent, defeating Jeff French 6-0, 6-1 for his first victory of the season. Senior Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) followed suit with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over RK Bacalla, while senior Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Brandenton Academy) disposed of Alex Birchmeier, 6-4, 6-4.
Michigan was in contention in the four remaining matches, but none of the Wolverines were able to pull out a victory. Sophomore Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) got in front of Brady Crosby early but eventually fell by a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 score. Senior David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) nearly pulled off a comeback victory in his match, but Tim Bradshaw prevailed with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 decision.
Freshman Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) fought valiantly against Jose Orozco but fell victim in each tiebreaker set, losing 7-6(4), 7-6(3). Sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) also put forth a gutsy effort against Tommy Dennis in a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7) defeat.
The Wolverines were unable to pick up a victory in their two doubles matches against Ohio State earlier in the afternoon. Heller and Hung fell to Ross Wilson and Drew Eberly, 8-4, and Fischer and Maravic followed with an 8-6 loss to Joey Atas and Scott Green.
Michigan returns to the Varsity Tennis Center tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 17) for the final day of competition. U-M will match up against Michigan State in singles beginning at 2 p.m.
